Truth – Puppets (LABCD002)

I have been fortunate to been able to listen to the forthcoming full length release from New Zealand duo Truth, a few times over the past week or so.  Fortunately after a number I’m pleased to report that in a year where the dubstep scene is constantly being pulled in myriad new directions, the bass-heavy, halfstep rhythms that helped lay the foundation of the movement are still alive and stronger than ever. No better evidence of this than the long-awaited full length release from Truth due September 6th on Aquatic Lab.

Anybody who has had their eyes and ears out should not need much an an introduction to this trio who’s tunes have already received enough accolades to have releases on Deep Medi and Disfigured Dubz. Given that the group’s resumé includes the standards ‘The Fatman,’ ‘Terror Planet,’ and this year’s ‘Burglar’ most heads are already familiar with the aggressive, (yet not comically so) deep sounds of Truth. What we are left with as a result is hands down one of the most sonically present releases I’ve heard in a long time. In short, this one is really loud.

It’s ambitious of me to think that I can write a review that can appropriate homage all fifteen tracks of the release, instead I will provide a brief summation of the tracks that I feel are the standouts of the release. Obviously I implore you to check the whole release for yourself because it is quite excellent, and obviously, tastes are unique and it stands as a complete album from start-to-finish quite well.

‘Puppets’ - The title track for this release, a deep eyes down halfstepper with alternating bass rolls and swells that push the tune along nicely epitomize the dark aesthetic of the release as a whole.  Have already had an opportunity to play this one out and it definitely elicited a large reaction for what is a very minimal tune compared to others on the release.

The Fatman - This has been a classic for a while, I have yet to take it out of rotation since it originally dropped on Deep Medi, alongside Terror Planet, which sees a VIP remake on this release, also a must listen and must play.

Indigo Mood – The penultimate track on the release sees Truth exploring the same deepness alluded to on Puppets however with a much smoother rhythm section and a purposeful melodic elements that give the track the oft cited ‘eyes down’ dancehall vibe many describe. I am always a fan of music such as this, eliciting a more introspective mood on the dancefloor than hands-in-the-air rave energy.

This release is obviously a no-brainer given the sheer number of selections, and the quality that Truth and Aquatic Lab have already become reknowned for.
