Wheez-ie – Big Gulp EP (FRSH009)
A favorite of icnt.mx, Boston resident via Houston, Wheez-ie (Matt Mauldin) brings his distinct, in-demand sound to the fellow Houston natives Freshmore for his Big Gulp EP scheduled for release on the label June 16.
Four selections round out Big Gulp EP, featuring two Wheez-Ie originals each paired with remixes by Doctor Jeep and rapidly rising NYC trio Archie Pelago.
Update: To whet your proverbial appetite, Freshmore is giving away a free remix of the title track Big Gulp reworked by Juxta. Kick over to Soundcloud to check it out.

Full disclosure, I have been looking forward to this release since first hearing the EP’s titular Big Gulp while seeing this live Broodlings set, where it’s inclusion prompted a quick and mandatory reload from yours truly. Doctor Jeep slows the tempo down on the original turning the frenetic Big Gulp into a spacious UK Garage interpretation shifting the rhythm section into a smooth yet shifty rhythm referencing the sounds of Zed Bias. I am always appreciative of remixes that effectively push the sounds of the original into a completely new context.
Wheez-ie shows his appreciation for his homeland of Houston with 281-713-832, not only in the name of the song itself but it’s unapologetic use of UGK samples as the centerpiece of the track. New York trio Archie Pelago ease 281-713-832 with their signature ability to provide instrumental interpretations of electronic music. Working with a largely different pallet of sounds compared to their lauded remix of Distal and HxdB, the trio’s versatility as masters of their craft and instruments will remain largely unchallenged.
