Spiritualized in Atlanta

Aside

Not too much of a secret that I am a huge fan of Spiritualized, having written about their most recent album, and featuring their first release as a part of Wayback Wednesday.

I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to see them live for the second time in the fifteen or so years I’ve enjoyed their music, which for me is a real treat as Jason Pierce has been a long-time personal favorite of mine and his touring is growing less frequent with age and his increased medical issues.

Trying my best to not watch the show through the 3.5″ screen of my iPhone I did have to take a few moments during the show to get some photographs, as I had secured myself a great viewing spot one person back from he lip of the stage.

One of the most intense shows I have seen in a while, even this morning waking up much of it remained with me. Very grateful for the opportunity to see them and not have to travel far to do so.

Meme Night at Terminal West

Featured

Riff Riff at Terminal WestOne of the more interesting evenings of music Atlanta has witnessed in a while. I know it was for me, and given the lineup of Eli Porter, Riff Raff, and The Black Lips, I can only imagine the same holds true for anybody else in attendance at Terminal West at King Plow.

The evening starting with two rap artists, despite their television appearances, owe most of their success to the virality of their YouTube presence.

For a complete recap of the show as well as more photos and video, check beneath the fold.

Also be sure to check out Creative Loafing’s review of the evening as well
(but don’t tell them it wasn’t a dubstep show!)

Windish Agency Assimilates Coachella

Aside

LA Times’ Blog section reporting on the influence of Tom Windish and The Windish Agency‘s growing influence on the annual lineup for Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and SXSW alike.

This year alone the Windish Agency reps 20 acts on Coachella’s bill of 143 artists, including headliner dance and electronic acts such as Justice and Amon Tobin, as well as buzz artist of the moment Gotye.

At the recent South by Southwest Music Festival and Conference in Austin, Texas, Windish suggested meeting up to see some of his artists. One didn’t have to go far to hear one of his agency’s acts, as they were featured in more than 700 performances over the five-day event.[*]

For more information, read the Coachella Weekend 1 Recap from the Windish Agency website, as well as this Billboard Biz interview with agency founder Tom Windish.

Corporate Rave Culture

Ultra Music Festival MiamiNew York Times goes in-depth on the rise of corporate funding for underground electronic dance music. Fresh off the heels of Ultra Music Festival last month, and the sentiments from PercussionLab last week, and a related post today, sharing this article felt appropriate.

The big dance festivals have built themselves into valuable brands, able to sell tickets on their name alone and the immersive audio-visual spectacle they present. One big company could bring together a handful of promoters and find economies of scale.[*]

A few things I found missing from the New York Times piece, I feel the writers failed to mention the amount of good corporate money fostering valuable contributions to the music industry.

Eli Porter Documentary – Iron Mic Champ

Eli PorterHe’s the best, he told you that.

I assume by now many readers are familiar with Atlanta hip-hop phenom Eli Porter, from the class of 2005 – undisputed king of the Iron Mic Freestyle Battle as proven by his decimation of Envy. What you may not be aware of, however, is the half-hour documentary on the people’s champion that was produced last year and premiered at Atlanta’s Apache Cafe before what I’m sure was an illustrious performance from Porter.

ORDER TICKETS FOR ELI PORTER / RIFF RAFF / THE BLACK LIPS AT TERMINAL WEST – SAT MAY 12, 2012

The documentary does feature noticeably better production than the original Iron Mic video and is a valuable and informative follow-up to one of the greatest YouTube videos in existence, with insight from acclaimed rapper Andy Milonakis as well as appearances from original judges Marv-O, J-Dub, and Stephen Jackson Action Jackson. Teachers, students, and faculty from Chamblee Charter School, host to the genre-defining battle, meticulously crafted over this wicked Dipset beat, provide valuable insight on Iron Mic’s legacy and recognizable production aesthetic.

Sadly, I missed the premiere and show at Apache but all is not lost; Eli’s return is confirmed for Terminal West at King Plow alongside headliners The Black Lips on May 12. Much thanks to Terminal West, Tight Brothers, and Speakeasy Promotions for pulling this off.

Check beneath the fold to watch the Eli Porter documentary in full, more information about the show as it becomes available.

Terminal West Is Not A Rave Cave

Atlanta’s premier music destination in a converted iron and steel foundry, built primarily from reclaimed metals, wood and brick — and the coup de grâce, the original boiler as the centerpiece of the room and rooftop bar.

These are the only descriptions of Terminal West, King Plow’s new music venue, worth reading in Creative Loafing’s recent recap of the Terminal West launch, titled Terminal West at King Plow: The house that dubstep built.

Howell Mill Food Park Opening

Excitement today for Atlanta’s food-truck fans as this evening brings the opening of the newly formed Howell Mill Food Park.

Located at the 1927 Emery Street (behind Willy’s near the Howell Mill / Collier Rd intersection). the park plans to offer space for diners to sample offerings from up to ten different food trucks. This is a change of pace from the situation a year ago when the City of Atlanta was a lot more litigious towards food trucks. Additionally, it is good to see some attention being paid to offering food truck gatherings outside of corporate business lunch hours. As someone who works ‘OTP’ in Atlanta I unfortunately miss the lunch gatherings many food trucks regularly make at Stove Works and Atlantic Station.

Upcoming Show: 26-Nov @ King Plow

Borgore @ King Plow

Click image for presale ticket info

The day after Thanksgiving, Atlanta Dubstep will be bringing Borgore to the King Plow Arts Center alongside Judi Chicago, with local support from Ployd and myself.

You can make any comments you want on the irony that a year ago I was running the Brostep Forum, and in a little over a week I will be playing at a Borgore show but I’ve either already commented on it myself, or heard it from someone else. Besides, it doesn’t really matter because in all honesty I’m looking forward to playing this show more than have any show in recent memory. The production at King Plow combined with Music Matters Productions is always top notch; playing on 24×18″s plus a line array, in a factory-turned-art-gallery with lights and visuals to a room as packed out as King Plow gets is a dream for anybody who enjoys DJing. If they tell you otherwise, they’re a damn liar.

That being said, I hope to see those who can make it out at this, the Atlanta Dubstep team is definitely putting a lot of work into this one, and the Music Matters / King Plow combination is among some of the most professional people I’ve worked with ever. Combine that with some of the world’s most recognized talent right now on a holiday weekend and things are primed to get out of control. You can rest assured I am putting a lot of attention to detail into my own set as well; I have wanted to play on the combined King Plow / Atlanta Dubstep systems in that room for quite a while and look forward to making the most of the opportunity next week.

6-Nov : Appleblim @ The Soundtable (ATL)

Extremely excited about this one coming up next Saturday, 6-Nov in Atlanta as the Atlanta Dubstep crew brings back one of the first artists we ever brought, and welcome the return of Appleblim. I have pointed out in previous postings the effect Appleblim and Shackleton have had on me; I frequently credit their Skull Disco label as the turning point in my new-found appreciation for the darker sounds of techno, and more recently its distant cousin minimal house. Obviously my appreciation for the latter keeps me well on the pulse of his current ApplePips imprint

Appleblim’s first trip to Atlatna last year was ons of the most diverse sets I have heard live; and probably the first time I ever heard Untold being played on a club system. Every record from Untold, to Joker, to his own productions throughout the course of the evening and I would expect next week to be no different. Sound provided by Atlanta Dubstep, local support from D:RC and Mite. Be sure to come out early and check out the unique food and drink menus offered at The SoundTable and stay late for what will surely be a mind-expanding evening of live music. Complete information available beneath the fold
