Here is an enjoyable recollection of a Texas BBQ trip recently completed by a long-time friend of mine known simply as The Legend. The article, published earlier this week on the EatItAtlata website, is not for the faint of heart or those with any aversion to eating cow.

Overall a great trip was had (approx 700 miles in the car….), some disappointments (I’m looking at you Lockhart, Texas) and some high points (Snow’s, beef rib at Louie Mueller, burnt ends at Pecan Lodge, and sausage at La Barbecue).

Hopefully the Carolinas are next……

Once largely ignored by the city of Atlanta, Freaknik steadily grew in size and soon local officials were desperately trying to organize the sexually charged mêlée by adding a career fair, concession stands along Auburn Avenue, and community basketball games. They even attempted name changes like the Sweet Auburn Festival and Black College Weekend, but their efforts were all in vain. The following meal is from a trip earlier in the year to Greenville, SC to visit family and check out some of the restaurants there (meaning there is more to show from this trip). Much thanks to Eat It, Atlanta, who frequents the area, for steerIng me In the rIght direction.

The following was taken from a meal at The American Grocery in Greenville, SC. Starting the meal off with charcuterie, featuring Jamón Iberico and Tallegio cheese, my personal favorite (if it is indeed possible to have a favorite cheese). For my main course I opted for beef tongue, whIch I have only had a few times but have never been disappointed wIth the result. AmerIcan Grocery served theIr preparation In a tomato-based stew, the acidity of whIch balanced the lean cut of beef nIcely. The portIons, as you can see, were more than ample.

An excellent IntroductIon for me for what Greenville  SC has to offer that sets the bar hIgh, for a restaurant In any cIty.

There was a time where making copies of copies posed a serious problem. (spare me). Although I grew up surrounded by homemade VHS tapes of various tv shows and movies, I became aware  analog loss in later years, making analog copies of Phish shows recorded to DAT.

Anyway, above is ten generations of VHS shown simultaneously via split-screen. By around 7 or 8 it is barely watchable.

The ability to identify tones and thus enjoy harmonies was positively correlated with musical training. Said study co-author Sarah Wilson, “This showed us that even the ability to hear a musical pitch (or note) is learned.”

From a practical standpoint, the results seem to suggest that we can train ourselves to better appreciate music. This includes that of unfamiliar traditions, which, assuming this is not just a clever way of promoting the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, is great news for those who’ve been wanting to get into jazz . Collecting tweets from the period between Aug 2012 and Dec 2012, members of the Oxford Internet Institute gathered information via Twitter and geolocation to see who’s fans are where, and show some quantitative data.

The data used include all geotagged tweets mentioning any of the Premiership football teams and their associated hashtags (e.g., #MUFC or #YNWA) that were sent between August 18 and December 19, 2012. We have only included one tweet per user to prevent ‘loud’ fans from skewing the results. The users were then aggregated to postcode districts in order to see a fairly fine-grained geography of results. The number of tweeters per district is normalized by the total ‘population’ of Twitter users based on a 0.25% random sample of all tweets within the UK.

Researchers in London claim that listening to classical music makes for unsafe driving — in fact, that it caused more erratic driving than hip-hop, heavy metal or not listening to music at all...

…also identified individual songs that were even worse for auto safety than classical music; the Black Eyed Peas‘ dancehall-flavored “Hey Mama,” for starters, was judged the single most dangerous song for driving

Honestly, I found this a lot better than the recently shared REM rework, no offense to Melodyne. Be sure to give this reworking of Rage Against The Machine’s ever-popular single “Killing In The Name” a listen, performed in a style, that to me, is reminiscent of a lot of 311 material.

After messing around with Memento, trying to do it myself with Evernote, and a few other variations, Day One hits the mark of providing a clean interface while still providing a rich feature set  that you can only find through digital journaling.

Day One has a straight-forward, and great looking app on both OS X and iOS, allowing you to add photos, geolocation, and weather to journal entries, additionally providing synchronization between devices by using your iCloud or Dropbox accounts so your posts show up the same regardless of which device you using to create, or subsequently revisiting your entries.

While most of my entries are not incredibly long, or self-reflective I do appreciate the ability to go back and revisit these thoughts and experiences later on. Take a look at the app in-depth with the links below; the feature set is rich, and the UI is great – both of which are important in making sure the app is one I will want to continue to revisit and use as time goes on.

This happened a few days ago, but I figured I would wait a few days for the cluster of Christmas to settle down before expecting traffic on the site to pick up. Ray Collins, original member of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention lineup passed away on December 24, 2012 after days of being in a medically induced coma

I will always appreciate and remember Collins’ falsetto contributions on Cruising With Ruben and the Jets, one of the earlier and often overlooked albums from Zappa and the Mothers; a full album ode to the bands’ appreciation for doo-wop.

“Too much comedy, too much making fun of stuff,” Collins said in an interview with the Daily Bulletin. “I just wanted to make beautiful music. I was raised on Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole.”

For a $1,000 licensing fee, fans can own a master duplication copy of the recording, which they can copy and sell for whatever price they’d like, with $1.20 per-CD mechanical royalty to be paid to Zappa Records.

The proceeds from licensing these recordings will go towards the restoration and release of the video portion of Roxy & Elsewhere, which has been a long time coming for Zappa fans.

Frank Zappa Fans Offered Unique Access To Unreleased Music [via Rolling Stone]

According to an article from Chicago magazine, which cites a 1995 article by Mandigo, “restructured meat product” contains a mixture of tripe, heart, and scalded stomach, which is then mixed with salt and water to extract proteins from the muscle. The proteins bind all the pork trimmings together so that it can be re-molded into any specific shape — in this case, a fake slab of ribs.
