For a bunch of guys who never took their musical aptitude seriously, there is no denying The Clash developed chops and were a formidable group of musicians when it was all said and done.
Below is the isolated bass track from Safe European Home, check out that tone!

Another trip to Taka Sushi last night, and was fortunate enough to be able to order omakase this time, always grateful to see the live clam w/ avocado on the menu, and the photos of the short rib to not do it justice. The meat easily falls apart when pulled with chopsticks and is incredibly tender and well flavoured. Without a doubt Taka is serving the best short rib in Atlanta.
ATL Legend's 48-hour, 700-mile, 9 restaurant Texas BBQ tour, a recollection of a weekend trip published by Atlanta blog EatItAtlata

Nine stops, 48 hours, and a whole lot of animal flesh.

Here is an enjoyable recollection of a Texas BBQ trip recently completed by a long-time friend of mine known simply as The Legend. The article, published earlier this week on the EatItAtlata website, is not for the faint of heart or those with any aversion to eating cow.

Overall a great trip was had (approx 700 miles in the car….), some disappointments (I’m looking at you Lockhart, Texas) and some high points (Snow’s, beef rib at Louie Mueller, burnt ends at Pecan Lodge, and sausage at La Barbecue).

Hopefully the Carolinas are next……

Editors Note: I fully understand some might take issue to me using a pork photo as the banner of an article on Texas BBQ, but let’s be honest, that pork belly looks delicious.

Being from Atlanta, and growing up when this took place my frame of reference is unique, but this was an enjoyable read. despite the myriad typographical and spelling errors.

Once largely ignored by the city of Atlanta, Freaknik steadily grew in size and soon local officials were desperately trying to organize the sexually charged mêlée by adding a career fair, concession stands along Auburn Avenue, and community basketball games. They even attempted name changes like the Sweet Auburn Festival and Black College Weekend, but their efforts were all in vain. By 1992, the little picnic had turned into a full-on street party without inhibitions, boasting some 200,000 attendees over-running almost every part of the city, and crowding out residents and workers who made their living there. Thus, the legend of Freaknik was born.

No qualms over the fact I was a loyal follower of WWF/WWE during the Attitude Era of 1998-2001, I suppose it is out of sheer inertia that I ended up watching Wrestlemania 29 this past Sunday. Having not kept up with professional wrestling the past few years I ended up pulling for who I remembered, Triple H (now aged 43), and obviously The Rock (age 40).

All details aside, John Cena had a well-anticipated victory was one of the most anti-climactic passing of the torches I’ve ever saw, I had a difficult time figuring out why, perhaps from lack of paying attention to wrestling for the past decade, but the crew over at Grantland presents this article outlining the challenges the WWE faces with Cena quite eloquently.

When WWE pretends its narrative is working when it’s clearly not, its dishonesty affects how people view its product. If we can’t even be sure that heroes are heroes anymore, then what’s the point of cheering?

Awesome stuff on the vein of ambient/drone/post-dub, whatever adjective we are using for really sparse techno records this week coming from Emptyset, the duo of Paul Purgas and James Ginzburg (Ginz).

Expounding on 2012′s Medium, Material is a collection of sparse Loefah-esque growls captured as the duo bombarded cavernous locations with immense soundsystems and recorded the ensuing reflections.

Full preview below

Three completely otherworldly tracks, from locations decidedly of our own as evidenced by the track-titles. Some fascinating and incredible sounding work on this release. While other reviews attempt to qualify this release as a treatise on the future of humanity, let us appreciate it as a welcome 12″ focused on quality sound design.

Review and Photos from Greenville, SC restaurant The American Grocery. Highlighting a three course meal in January 2013

As mentioned previously, it has taken me a while to get some older food posts I have been planning, but now that I’ve gotten Evernote Food items to show up properly on icnt.mx, we can get back to gastronomy.

The following meal is from a trip earlier in the year to Greenville, SC to visit family and check out some of the restaurants there (meaning there is more to show from this trip). Much thanks to Eat It, Atlanta, who frequents the area, for steerIng me In the rIght direction.

The following was taken from a meal at The American Grocery in Greenville, SC. Starting the meal off with charcuterie, featuring Jamón Iberico and Tallegio cheese, my personal favorite (if it is indeed possible to have a favorite cheese). For my main course I opted for beef tongue, whIch I have only had a few times but have never been disappointed wIth the result. AmerIcan Grocery served theIr preparation In a tomato-based stew, the acidity of whIch balanced the lean cut of beef nIcely. The portIons, as you can see, were more than ample.

An excellent IntroductIon for me for what Greenville SC has to offer that sets the bar hIgh, for a restaurant In any cIty.

Hooktheory makes learning about basic music theory easy and fast. Analysis of popular music chord progressions and scales, and free ear training online

Contrary to what you might believe if you spend time on Soundcloud, or Pitchfork, there is a method to the madness of writing music.

Music theory is not an easy sell to a teenager with their first electric-guitar, or a freshly pirated DAW, but Hooktheory has manages to present the hows and whys of what makes “good music” sound “good.”

Highlighting chord progressions of popular songs and overlaying visuals of how everything relates on standard musical scales, Hooktheory provides a fun and interactive way to learn why the music we enjoy hearing sounds the way that it does.

There was a time where making copies of copies posed a serious problem. (spare me). Although I grew up surrounded by homemade VHS tapes of various tv shows and movies, I became aware analog loss in later years, making analog copies of Phish shows recorded to DAT.

Anyway, above is ten generations of VHS shown simultaneously via split-screen. By around 7 or 8 it is barely watchable.

I have included a short excerpt below but recommend the whole thing – it’s quick.

B: Do reviews improve anything?

H: I think a couple of times in my career they’ve been helpful. But restaurant critics are a little more honest, because they review the food they ate. Sometimes literary critics review the book they wanted you to write, not the book you wrote, and that’s very irksome. [*]

What a difference a few years makes! The $70 Automatic includes access to the app and the integrated OBD-ii dongle.

With a highly-refined app, and my well documented obsession with technology and statistics, this is definitely on my to-buy list. I recently added the JawBone Up to my personal repertoire for tracking movement, eating, and sleep and have used Fuelly for a several years to manually track fuel economy and costs, and Waze to manage and track driving / directions. Excited for a solution to combine all these concepts in a good-looking app and give more accuracy than I could get tryIng to cull data manually.

“It’s important to think about the life cycle of the recording as it’s made and not just 80 years later when you open your closet and see these things and scratch your head,” Brylawski says. “Thinking about the life cycle of a born digital item as soon as it’s made — that would be the best way to think about [the question of], ‘How will this be preserved?’ “

A recently reported study from the University of Melbourne was covered in The Atlantic, for its scientific observation of how humans come to hear, understand, and appreciate music. I’m certain this comes to the chagrin of the Sidney Dean who was quite insistent of Billy Hoyle’s well-established inability to “hear Jimi”

The ability to identify tones and thus enjoy harmonies was positively correlated with musical training. Said study co-author Sarah Wilson, “This showed us that even the ability to hear a musical pitch (or note) is learned.”

From a practical standpoint, the results seem to suggest that we can train ourselves to better appreciate music. This includes that of unfamiliar traditions, which, assuming this is not just a clever way of promoting the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, is great news for those who’ve been wanting to get into jazz . [*]

Thanks to our friends at NPR for sharing this with us

A lot of deserved attention lately for Atlanta’s Metro Mall security guard Darien Long. Videos of Darien enforcing order on his employer’s property, single-handedly driving off nuisance makers and alleged drug dealers using nothing more than firm words, a taser, and the letter of the law.

Videos taken by Darien have become increasingly popular online this week, most notably three videos occurring of the course of the past week, [video 1, video 2, video 3] as well as local news coverage, but more importantly is the fund-raiser started to help keep Darien well equipped and safe at work.

An interactive map showing Premier League football fandom by area in the UK

After yesterday’s exciting EPL action, first with Arsenal’s big 5-1 win, followed by Chelsea being Chelsea, this felt like timely sharing.

Collecting tweets from the period between Aug 2012 and Dec 2012, members of the Oxford Internet Institute gathered information via Twitter and geolocation to see who’s fans are where, and show some quantitative data.

View The Interactive Map

The data used include all geotagged tweets mentioning any of the Premiership football teams and their associated hashtags (e.g., #MUFC or #YNWA) that were sent between August 18 and December 19, 2012. We have only included one tweet per user to prevent ‘loud’ fans from skewing the results. The users were then aggregated to postcode districts in order to see a fairly fine-grained geography of results. The number of tweeters per district is normalized by the total ‘population’ of Twitter users based on a 0.25% random sample of all tweets within the UK.

Honestly, I found this a lot better than the recently shared REM rework, no offense to Melodyne. Be sure to give this reworking of Rage Against The Machine’s ever-popular single “Killing In The Name” a listen, performed in a style, that to me, is reminiscent of a lot of 311 material.

I have sharply increased the amount of writing I have done throughout 2012, however not limiting it to contributions online. Enter Day One, which is probably my favorite app in a while; easily the best electronic journaling app I have used.

After messing around with Memento, trying to do it myself with Evernote, and a few other variations, Day One hits the mark of providing a clean interface while still providing a rich feature set that you can only find through digital journaling.

Day One has a straight-forward, and great looking app on both OS X and iOS, allowing you to add photos, geolocation, and weather to journal entries, additionally providing synchronization between devices by using your iCloud or Dropbox accounts so your posts show up the same regardless of which device you using to create, or subsequently revisiting your entries.

While most of my entries are not incredibly long, or self-reflective I do appreciate the ability to go back and revisit these thoughts and experiences later on. Take a look at the app in-depth with the links below; the feature set is rich, and the UI is great – both of which are important in making sure the app is one I will want to continue to revisit and use as time goes on.

A playground for sound designers and programmers alike, the BBC has opened up the vaults on it’s old radio sound design department, allowing visitors to recreate sounds from classic BBC radio series. In addition, using the open Web Audio API standard, programmers can leverage this collection for use in their own software / websites.

Explore the BBC sound of the 1960s with our 4 demos of Radiophonic equipment, built with the new Web Audio API standard. Each demo comes with commented code, so you can learn how to build your own audio applications.

I am very much looking forward to bedroom producers abusing the ‘wobbulator‘ section

Obituary for Ray Collins, falsetto singer and member of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention group, who passed away December 24, 2012

This happened a few days ago, but I figured I would wait a few days for the cluster of Christmas to settle down before expecting traffic on the site to pick up. Ray Collins, original member of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention lineup passed away on December 24, 2012 after days of being in a medically induced coma

I will always appreciate and remember Collins’ falsetto contributions on Cruising With Ruben and the Jets, one of the earlier and often overlooked albums from Zappa and the Mothers; a full album ode to the bands’ appreciation for doo-wop.

Take a chance today to enjoy the album, and Ray Collins’ voice, through the Spotify stream of the album below.

“Too much comedy, too much making fun of stuff,” Collins said in an interview with the Daily Bulletin. “I just wanted to make beautiful music. I was raised on Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole.”

To raise money for the release of the video portions of the 1974 Roxy & Elsewhere anthology, the Zappa Family Trust opens licensing to two 1973 recordings

Even dead, Frank Zappa continues to push the boundaries of music marketing and sales, making the master recordings of two 1973 Roxy recordings available for purchase and even opening up the licensing of the recordings to allow for mass duplication and reselling.

For a $1,000 licensing fee, fans can own a master duplication copy of the recording, which they can copy and sell for whatever price they’d like, with $1.20 per-CD mechanical royalty to be paid to Zappa Records.

The proceeds from licensing these recordings will go towards the restoration and release of the video portion of Roxy & Elsewhere, which has been a long time coming for Zappa fans.
