I have been a long-time fan of Bukem for obvious reasons, his mixing is near unmatched by his peers, and have often cited this proficiency as a key influence in bringing me into the world of djing.

Atlanta friends should be doubly excited and use this as a nice warm-up to get ready for LTJ Bukem’s appearance at Terminal West in July.

The pinnacle of his electric period, for me, comes in the three live releases Dark Magus, Agharta, and Pangaea. In this post, we take a look at the first of these three, a live performance recorded at Carnegie Hall on March 30, 1974 – released originally in 1977.

In a conversation on “jazz albums for people who are not jazz fans,” Dark Magus should rank high at the top of anybody’s list; this release has a lot more in common with heavy metal / hard rock than it does with what most would associate Miles Davis with. Obviously the line-up for the recording plays into the reasons why, coming at a time when Miles Davis replaced Jack DeJohnette with drummer Al Foster who’s sound is noticeably stripped down but brings the ferocity of an 80s arena rock drummer. Similarly, the departure of John McLaughlin’s purely angular riffs for the Hendrix-like guitar onslaught of Reggie Lucas and most notably, Pete Cosey.

Ranked by Q Magazine as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums of all time, Dark Magus finds itself in the company of Slayer’s ‘Reign In Blood‘, The Stooges’ ‘Fun House‘, and Deep Purple’s ‘Machine Head,’ comparisons that all make perfect sense by the time one reaches the beginning of the second side of the first record/disc.

Dark Magus also finds Miles Davis making solid use of new technology, throughout much of the album, and for a rest of the period, noted for running his trumpet through a wah-wah pedal, offering a contrast to the traditional Harmon mute sound that has become nearly synonymous with Davis’ trumpeting. Additionally percussionist Mtume brings what might the first recorded drum-machine solos, almost certainly the first time in Carnegie Hall I’d assume.

Much appreciation for these releases comes from the recording technique. I prefer the “one-take” recording style of jazz pioneered by producers like Creed Taylor over the Dr. Frankensteinesque assembly of Teo Macero used on releases such as Bitches Brew and A Tribute To Jack Johnson. The essence of the music lies in the performance, not in the conglomeration of weeks of takes that give the performance a rigid perfectionist feel.

Dark Magus is a beast, as are the other albums from this 1973-1975 period. If you are a fan of dark, spacious, rough music anything from this period comes as a recommendation. If you are looking to learn a bit about jazz, or Miles Davis in particular this is definitely an accessible starting point for most.

I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to see them live for the second time in the fifteen or so years I’ve enjoyed their music, which for me is a real treat as Jason Pierce has been a long-time personal favorite of mine and his touring is growing less frequent with age and his increased medical issues.

Trying my best to not watch the show through the 3.5″ screen of my iPhone I did have to take a few moments during the show to get some photographs, as I had secured myself a great viewing spot one person back from he lip of the stage.

The evening starting with two rap artists, despite their television appearances, owe most of their success to the virality of their YouTube presence.

The wait leading up to Eli Porter‘s set felt long in part due to audience anticipation; more likely, however, it’s the short length of Eli’s set. This is only an observation and not a complaint; I do not expect a rapper who’s claim to fame is 90 seconds of ad-lib over The Diplomats to have a fully developed set. In the artist’s defense, never let it be claimed that Eli Porter isn’t a performer who knows how to play to his strengths. The lyrical content of Porter’s music is nothing outside the traditional expectations of mainstream rap music, with insightful metaphors on one’s lyrical ability, net worth, and affinity for asset collection. Eli Porter‘s presence alone seems enough to captivate his audience’s attention. Perhaps it is a product of the artists few public performances, or maybe the audience’s seemingly universal low expectations. Given the production quality of the video that debuted Eli Porter to the world, I do not think it is an unfair assumption either.

Following Eli Porter‘s roughly half-dozen song set, Terminal West was graced by the presence of Riff Raff. Gaining notoriety for bizarre YouTube videos, an appearance on an MTV reality show, and signings to Soulja Boy’s SODMG, and Diplo’s Mad Decent record label,  expectations seemed higher, albeit still reserved, for Riff Raff’s appearance. The artist’s fans quite literally “Brought The Rice Out” (citing the artists popular single), standing in the crowd quickly felt like being a newlywed as suddenly I found myself surrounded by dozens of people hurling rice by the jarful.

The contrast between the two rapper’s style of performance was quite stark; Eli Porter appearing to me to have a better command of his audience while performing his music however, Riff Raff‘s personality and quick tongue brings a unique sense of audience interaction to his performance. Two totally different approaches to handling crowds, a concept both artists seemed to clearly understand and fortunately work to their advantage.

The evening was capped off by an energetic performance from Atlanta-based punk quartet The Black Lips – whose music I appreciate however, what I took away from their performance was the way the entire venue’s dynamic shifted as soon as they took the stage. There is not much need to explain the differences between obscenely self-referencing rap music and punk rock, nor do I need to elaborate on the differences between the two behaviors of crowds during the two contrasting events.

A number of readers of this site are fans of electronic music with an appreciation for how ‘things can go seriously wrong’ when changing performers results in a jarring change in style and tempo — not the case with The Black Lips following rappers.

It is important to discuss it is likely the only time I will witness them occurring nearly simultaneously, and in an intimate environment such as Terminal West as opposed to a major music festival, where schizophrenic booking seems the expectation.

Shout out to the FOH / monitor engineers at Terminal West last night; they definitely earned their pay keeping everything in-check last night between such unique performers.

In the interview Tarantino provides six reasons why he thinks all recorded music should be free. Ever the opinionated music writer, and capitalist, I felt it only proper to offer a retort to his six points.

1. Record labels want too much money
I assume Tarantino is referring to major labels here. He is right, it’s also probably why so many artists have started their own labels. With online solutions and fulfillment from companies like Surus and TopSpin, distributorship is no longer in the hands of a few players; if you don’t like what major labels offer there are viable options for doing it yourself, and making money doing it.

2. Musicians Already Get Paid More by Touring Anyway
This is a ridiculous argument. I suppose if I suspend my disbelief that musicians would rather be on the road 200 days a year instead of working on their craft in the studio this might make sense. Note to Tarantino however, without musicians having the time to work on new material, your favorite bands tour is going to get real old real fast.

3. The Music Business Is Too Slow and Partially Broken
Similar to the points I raised in number one. It’s very easy to look at what major record labels and agree that large monolithic corporations are slow to change. It should also be noted that these grievances are not limited to the music industry. The American airline industry is suffering the same overall malaise due to their lack of adaptability to modern expectations.

4. Grooveshark is modeled on early YouTube (the one that got sued)
Cool story bro. YouTube pays artists even less than Spotify does, assuming the licensing is even linked properly. It got sued because nobody was getting paid for their art being displayed, at the end of the day you’re building a museum of low-quality stolen duplicates.

5. Grooveshark complies with takedown notices
Again, cool story bro. Is your compliance with established international law supposed to make me feel like you are a humanitarian? Nice try, no awards for doing what is expected of you as a business owner.

6. Grooveshark’s Ad Platform Can Boost an Unknown Band to 500K Views in Three Weeks
Oh god, it’s a sales pitch. RUN!

Thanks to Gizmodo and Sam Tarantino for this compelling Q/A that didn’t really address what the article set out to, and giving me even less interest in wanting to get Grooveshark working on my iPhone.

The term ‘best-friend‘ is thrown around informally and in the context of the study – scientifically and practically it makes sense that a best friend is the person with whom you communicate with the most.

An interesting aspect of the study involves  development of “motherly habits.” Yes for the women readers, science legitimately suggests the belief that your mother calls more as you get older is not just your imagination.

Aeolus is currently installed in London’s Canada Square Park, Canary Wharf, from 27-Mar through 10-May 2012, and access is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Everything is very high quality, for instance each notebook is inspected for 30 minutes for quality control, and I think when people hold one they recognize this quality.[*]

I am not one to pass judgement, as I often pretend to be a writer, I own a number of them myself, in various sizes, for various projects. I even went so far as to try the Moleskine iOS app once. Maybe one of the worst apps I’ve ever used, poorly designed and let’s be honest — there are times when it’s just faster to pen + paper it.

So yes, I am a fan however, probably not as bad as these guys.

I have spent some time redesigning the landing page, to present you with more information, in a layout I hope is not overwhelming. The center area hosts the major items, and recently I have added The Selection to the sidebar on the left. These are usually shorter posts linking to something off-site that I wanted to share but do not need a whole article typically.

Also, there are a million music blogs right now, and we’ve had some great music posts, I DO NOT WANT THIS TO BE ONLY A MUSIC BLOG.  So, more articles on technology, lulzy internet finds, and other random things are coming.

I have also been trying to step up my Facebook game, often times there are things on the internet I want to share and do not want to write a full article on here. This year alone the Windish Agency reps 20 acts on Coachella’s bill of 143 artists, including headliner dance and electronic acts such as Justice and Amon Tobin, as well as buzz artist of the moment Gotye.

 

At the recent South by Southwest Music Festival and Conference in Austin, Texas, Windish suggested meeting up to see some of his artists. One didn’t have to go far to hear one of his agency’s acts, as they were featured in more than 700 performances over the five-day event.[*]

Upon first listen, the tempos and sounds used by Beaumont suggests late-night listening, so after a week of great events in Atlanta I came home late Saturday and cued up HF034 and began exploring.

Never Love Me continues HotFlush’s effortless ability to reinvent itself on this five tracks release. Tunes exhibiting the same unapologetic 80s feeling as its cover, and tracks equally sharp as the color selection. As alluded to earlier, those expecting a straight dancefloor release from Beaumont’s début on HotFlush has the wrong expectation.

Beaumont’s does not attempt to emulate current sounds foundational to Scuba’s Personality LP; the titular Never Love Me still uses a neon/pop sound opening the release, but is in no way peak-hour club music. Uptown, undoubtedly the releases deepest cut, resembles the Kavinsky cut from Drive, except the key difference — I want to keep listening to Beaumont, where the other sounds like prototypical emotional French electronic music.

Rendezvous and Verona Beach are as ‘heady’ but noticeably more uptempo, and exhibiting lush, wide-spectrum builds that have become a staple of productions from fellow HotFlush artists Sepalcure.

The digital release includes the bonus track Adrift, floating on synths wispy as the title suggests, and sharp hi-hats I always have a soft spot in my heart for, probably thanks to southern rap music.

After my first few listens, quite simply, Civilization is a breath of fresh-air to Tectonic. Distal will be the first to cite Pinch‘s influence in his own work, however Civilization transcends what most expect from the legendary label. Tracks exploring a wide palette of styles, not simply BPM, with the unmistakable aesthetic of a Distal production. More importantly the tracks and their arrangement do feel cohesive, a craft that seems to elude many full length releases in the current wave of electronic music.

I’m certain with the number of music blogs available these days, myriad reviews of this release are only days away and I am looking forward to hearing what others think of the work. Having heard a lot of these tunes both inside and outside the context of the album, and now ultimately being fortunate enough to see it all in the context of the finished product, it is understandably difficult for me to approach reviewing the material objectively.

Do not fret, I do have an exclusive piece coming up with IonPhoto, the Atlanta-based designer behind the Civilization cover, and notably my Twitter avatar.

Congratulations to someone I am fortunate not only to get to work with both on Sub.FM and with Embassy Recordings, but also someone who has become a good friend since we started non-sensing about politics after playing together at a part in EAV several years ago.

With a talent for blending hard-edged dubstep with  southern ‘trap’ style hip-hop, Gimpmode’s legacy can be heard in Atlanta DJs such as Mayhem and Heroes and Villains as well as the continuing work of groups like Atlanta Dubstep.

Thanks to DJ Nappy for recording this and Atlanta Dubstep on the original mention of this tribute to Gimpmode.

In an earlier post, we provided a preview of the title track from Commodo’s Soundcloud.

Commodo further solidifies his place in the arena of deep producers honest to the unsettling bass heavy productions popularized by early dubstep pioneers like Mala, Hatcha and Cyrus. The release’s four tracks have the definite Deep Medi feel of latin percussion matched with rich highly textured subtones. The highlight track for me on the release being Jaded, who’s meandering bassline and drone-based melody reference the aesthetics that originally enticed me to dubstep.

As always some brilliant quotes from Frank, most notably on how to raise children, as well as the value for musicians to embrace new technologies – demonstrating the capabilities of the synclavier.

Often this makes it difficult to develop good design on my own simply because I have no fundamental knowledge of the underlying concepts. Admittedly, this site’s design is not unique — I aim to focus on content, and only essential ‘bells-and-whistles’ that benefit the site’s usability.

Archie Pelago, a three-man outfit from Brooklyn, combines classically influenced cello, saxophone, and trumpet with contemporary music and modern technology for a sound that reaches beyond other electronic / instrumental collaborations in recent memory.

Lately, too many performers treat Ableton Live as DJ software, not leveraging the software’s potential to reshape music during  performance, a realization not lost on Archie Pelago.

The three track release from XI draws on the influences of the producer’s newfound home in Berlin, making it’s release on New Kanada, a perfect fit for a label who’s back catalogue includes artists such as Seuil, and Basic Soul Unit,

The sounds on NK34 are undeniably XI, basslines that are undeniably at the forefront of the mix and drive the pace of track. Not obnoxious formant-filter nonsense either; instead deep kicks syncopated with heavy ring-modulation that is equally fierce as it is melodic. On Joy/Fear, XI combines a swirling and stuttering vocal with subtle teases of acid techno sounds to create a track that references myriad influences effectively. Nightlif to me proved the most uplifting sounds on the release, with its bubbling synth-lead, and hopeful major-key pads reminiscent of the output of Sepalcure, and other recent additions to the HotFlush catalog. Antikythera rounds out the release with driving UKG style drums but still the unmistakable peak late night dancehall sound that is a hallmark of XI’s productions.

New York Times goes in-depth

The big dance festivals have built themselves into valuable brands, able to sell tickets on their name alone and the immersive audio-visual spectacle they present. One big company could bring together a handful of promoters and find economies of scale.[*]

A few things I found missing from the New York Times piece, I feel the writers failed to mention the amount of good corporate money fostering valuable contributions to the music industry.

Automobile manufacturer Scion enjoys involvement for several years promoting arts through their Scion A/V portal. The niche dubstep genre owes a major part of its US success to the company’s willingness to provide promoters, such as SMOG and Atlanta Dubstep, the resources to realize their vision and make niche promotion economically viable.

Even more importantly, this week many musicians I respect submitted for the annual Red Bull Music Academy, a self-described “series of music workshops and festivals: a platform for those who shape our musical future.” The role of RBMA cannot be under-estimated; note the comments by US based producer Salva in his recent interview with Live For The Funk.

I could go on about Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) for hours. Not to be emo about it, but it was life changing and really special. We’re all a family now. We all went through an emotional experience. We met living legends of recorded music, played epic parties, and got to sit in the studio for two weeks. All around it was humbling and awesome.[*]

I can appreciate, at a time like now, the reluctance to accepting the backing of major corporations – especially by a group that show the independence and anti-establishment views that many underground music fans posses. Hopefully comments like Salva’s enlighten those to the already existent corporate philanthropy of dance music.

The first, an installation titled Sleepless highlights the work of the perhaps ironically named Robert Knight, covered by both Wired and The Boston Globe. Knight also shares a video and matched soundtracks on his website.

On the same vein of thought, 8 Hours is the work of Martin Newth presenting a gallery of motel photographs taken during the photographer’s honeymoon. Each of the images is a large format 10×8 with a full 8-hour exposure, providing exquisite detail in the static parts of the images.

ABV Atlanta, the home base of Atlanta artist Greg Mike recently posted to their agency blog about their collaborative effort in developing the brand identity of Terminal West.

The insights by Greg Mike offer a valuable contrast to the misinformation offered by Christina Lee in her Creative Loafing coverage of the venue’s launch.

RISP is Richard Devine’s algorithm-based exploration of generative time structures for analog synths. The four track EP features its namesake, a tune first released on the duo’s eponymous debut last November, a new original ‘Don’t Cry,’ and remixes from Toronto-based techno wunderkind Kevin McPhee, and a contribution from Marcus Intalex under his Trevino guise.

The EP’s opening track Eternally Yrs is an obvious choice for a single from Sepalcure’s full-length; undoubtably one of the release’s stand-out tracks. The A-Side is not one-and-done however. Let it not be forgotten, Marcus Intalex deserves respect; this track is an anthem, Debbit is one of the most underhyped 140 tracks ever, also pretty sure my earliest Martyn memories are Revolve:r releases. We have come a long way from ‘Midnight’ however, Hold On (Trevino Remix) shifts the Sepalcure sound into a style that channels the percussive elements of UK Funky with a less boombastic, and instead sultry delivery.

Don’t Cry, the only new original Sepalcure track delivers. Dense and smooth bass drones and reflective melodies and colorful soundscapes for a warm sound that is at its heart still pensive. Kevin McPhee rounds the EP with his rework of The One, turning Sepalcure on its head and into 8-minute techno banger that sounds more familiar in HotFlush’s adopted home of Berlin more than McPhee’s Toronto that for me, is the highlight of the entire release.

I assume by now many readers are familiar with Atlanta hip-hop phenom Eli Porter, from the class of 2005 – undisputed king of the Iron Mic Freestyle Battle as proven by his decimation of Envy. What you may not be aware of, however, is the half-hour documentary on the people’s champion that was produced last year and premiered at Atlanta’s Apache Cafe before what I’m sure was an illustrious performance from Porter.

The documentary does feature noticeably better production than the original Iron Mic video and is a valuable and informative follow-up to one of the greatest YouTube videos in existence, with insight from acclaimed rapper Andy Milonakis as well as appearances from original judges Marv-O, J-Dub, and Stephen Jackson Action Jackson. Teachers, students, and faculty from Chamblee Charter School, host to the genre-defining battle, meticulously crafted over this wicked Dipset beat, provide valuable insight on Iron Mic’s legacy and recognizable production aesthetic.

Sadly, I missed the premiere and show at Apache but all is not lost; Eli’s return is confirmed for Terminal West at King Plow alongside headliners The Black Lips on May 12. Much thanks to Terminal West, Tight Brothers, and Speakeasy Promotions for pulling this off.

Highlights of the meal inclue the uni-topped toro (bigeye) pictured at left, and fried pork, a bit different from many of the other cooked dishes I have had previously at Taka. The mountain mushroom wrapped with flounder was interesting; I am not sure exactly what species of mushroom it was exactly and while the texture was pleasant the flavor left a bit to be desired.

In the group of three Japanese fish in one of the later courses the information I have regarding them that could not be fully listed in the link: Ainame (Fat Greenling), Mana Gatsuo (Butterfish) and Tachi Uo (Beltfish)

Also my first time trying out Evernote Food to keep on top of a meal. For managing as many courses as we had the app proved resourceful. I do not like how you cannot post things that happened in the past and key in the date after the fact but for handling the meal in near-real time it was helpful.

Far too often, honesty is met with ridicule, shame, or outright rage from people hiding behind electronic media. As a community, if our goal is to continue raising the bar for design, we need to get to a place where objective discussion is welcomed, not scorned or drowned in obsequiousness.

An excellent read from A List Apart on the importance of criticism by exploring the concept of artistic distance, the necessary ability for all artists  achieving detachment from the creative process and ultimately the products of their creation. I have brought similar concepts before in a post on objectivity and criticism, and was excited to read something new covering familiar concepts.

…unsolicited praise is useless beyond immediate ego-gratification. It teaches you nothing…

The article written from the mindset of an online graphic designer addresses concepts prevalent in any creative discipline, and especially applicable to musicians – and applicable as I have been known to critique their work

The concept of providing quality feedback to somebody while they are in the midst of the creative process is something I have struggled with, as musicians and producers have often provided sketches of works in progress. I understand the creative process as a writer, occasionally a photographer (although it has been some days since I shot with the Nikon or a film camera), and in a past life music production.

Often it is difficult to give feedback to somebody in the middle of the process; I do not know where their vision is and can only speak on my own interpretations and expectations. This makes me reluctant to want to approach unfinished work because I don’t want my expectations to influence or alter the artist’s original intent.

One last thing before I leave you to read the full article on Artistic Distance, although I am a critic I don’t expect my opinions hold more weight than anybody else’s. I have been known to take contrarian views on a number of popular topics, but never out of spite or disrespect. I like anybody have my own influences and tastes and I’m grateful that there is an audience that respects my opinion.

Perhaps a bit long of a read for those who have been effectively navigating the worlds of Facebook, Twitter, and Soundcloud, it is still a worthwhile piece that probably should be read by every rapper and grime artist I’ve ever tried to follow on Twitter.

Through understanding the differences in different social networks operate, how they present information, and how presentation affects conversion musicians can easily leverage the power of social networks to build a stronger and more engaged audience even in the down-time between releasing music and performing.

Drawing on lush soundscapes reminiscent of Sepalcure, and Damu this well-balanced release is a testament to Pohner’s depth.

The crew at Blatantly Blunt recently made Royal-T’s set from March 24, 2012 at Cable available to stream over on the group’s soundcloud page.

Listen to the set embedded below, hosted by the notorious Logan Sama. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear this one is available for download but hopefully stay up on the Blatantly Blunt Soundcloud for a moment.

Thankfully, I know better than to expect anything less than the best from two of music’s most highly acclaimed producers of the past decade. The pair recently collaborated on a pair of singles released on Rupert Parkes’ Photek Productions imprint.

The releases A-Side “Acid Reign [Pinch's Dubplate Verision],” not surprisingly given it’s title, uses acid techno‘s familiar 303 arpeggiated bleeps before dissolving to growling bass sounds and swirling vocals that are unmistakably Pinch, harkening an aesthetic reminiscent of Pinch’s remix of Skynet’s Swamp on Argon in the early days of dubstep, or more recently his single ’2012′ from Tectonic’s compilation released last year featuring reggae legend Scientist.

The releases b-side M25FM scales back compared to the aforementioned Acid Reign, still citing acid influences in the track’s main melody, verbed claps and slowly building synth strings. Definitely a lot smoother than it’s counterpart, but still undeniably exhibiting the production talents of both Photek and Pinch in creating a smooth dance friendly vibe despite it’s sheer darkness.

Both are definitely late night tracks, however each track seems to draw influence from unique destinations in London and Berlin respectively. For fans of the sound of Pinch, Distance, Boddika, or those who felt disenfranchised by Photek’s recent output, Acid Reign is a release definitely worth catching up on.

A free download of Damu today in XLR8R, coming off the heels of his Unity release on Keysound that I was fortunate to take a look at and cover in-depth on this site.

Sjunga, Swedish for Sing, exhibits the melodic UK Garage sounds typified by Damu, and true to the tracks name use of ethereal vocals. Fortunately this one is available as a 320k download so you can hear it in all its esteemed glory.

XLR8R Magazine offers a free download from Distal today, offering a link to download the Atlanta artist’s remix of The Pearl’s single “Flesh Eaters”

The remix is seeing release on The Pearl’s ‘Flesh Eaters’ 7″ release dropping April 12 via Bandcamp.

One of the most interesting applications of Twitter is not the social networking aspect, instead, the sheer amount of data the platform generates and the potential to mine the data to identify and solve problems or uncover interesting facts.

Another excellent example of data mining and data visualization is in this map that purports to show New York City‘s ‘happiest’ place overlaying geotagged tweets and developing a heat-map using keywords, using labMT scoring, are associated with positive or negative emotions.

The happiest “corner” is actually just inside the western edge of Central Park, where the intersection of 7th and 77th would be (this is just north of the lake and east of the Hayden Planetarium)*. This corner elicits tweets with a relatively high abundance of the positive words “loves” and “sky”, and proportionally less negative words like “not”, “fear” and “no”. Many of the happiest locations actually fall within Central Park!

Kevin Shields personally remastered both Loveless and Isn’t Anything at London’s Metropolis Studios. Loveless will be released as a 2-disc set that also features a previously unreleased version of the record, mastered from original analog tapes.

Atlanta’s premier music destination in a converted iron and steel foundry, built primarily from reclaimed metals, wood and brick — and the coup de grâce, the original boiler as the centerpiece of the room and rooftop bar.

These are the only descriptions of Terminal West, King Plow’s new music venue, worth reading in Creative Loafing’s recent recap of the Terminal West launch, titled Terminal West at King Plow: The house that dubstep built.

Full disclosure before I begin:

I freely admit I have voiced my concerns with Creative Loafing’s ‘dubstep coverage’ at least once before on this site, so perhaps I am not the most objective candidate for this observation.

Secondly, I have been fortunate to be involved with King Plow’s growth as a music venue from day one both personally and professionally, and while I appreciate the well-earned coverage they are receiving, one hopes media would portray the venue accurately.

Lastly, on the topic of things ‘dubstep built’ in Atlanta, my involvement with a number of organizations in this city throughout the past 5 years earns me qualification in that department.

I was invited to Terminal West’s launch party, an invitation only soft-launch an evening prior the one covered by Creative Loafing. An upscale, civil, event – attended by courteous, well-dressed, mild-mannered mostly East Cobb and Buckhead types, in an upscale refined location on Atlanta’s quickly gentrifying west side. The event’s headline artist was a King Plow regular performer and friend, The Mad Violinist, an area artist renowned for his unique musicianship. In case the name did not enlighten, the aforementioned is a violinist, versed in a classical musical instrument from the 16th century. Not a problem though, The Mad Violinist is a consummate performer who captivated the teenagers as easily as the septuagenarian set.

No cargo pants and certainly no glowsticks (prohibited at King Plow’s music events since its inception due to the historic nature of the surroundings – here is a picture of their ‘No Glowsticks’ sign I took because I was so impressed)

I do commend Creative Loafing for its ability to use popular internet keywords like INSTAGRAM and DUBSTEP in some lazy attempt to pretend it is presenting the reality that Atlanta finally has an upscale venue contending with the inertia plaguing venues such as The Variety Playhouse, or The Masquerade – the latter of which should include a tetanus shot as a part of any ticketing ‘convenience fee’ I ever have to pay for attending a show there.

King Plow Arts Center has been anchored by arts businesses, Bold American Catering, and regarded as one of the city’s more highly regarded convention / banquet spaces for well into the past decade. Terminal West at King Plow is the house that weddings and corporate events built.

Atlanta has needed an upscale music venue sized for crowds under 1000 for quite some time. The lack of a decent venue does not bode well for event promoters, and in turn means Atlanta misses out on its ability to continue booking engaging music events. With traditional artists like Yann Tiersen and Spiritualized continually looking to stop in Atlanta, it benefits the city as a whole to have another viable and enjoyable venue to negotiate with as opposed to settling for another dark converted theater with lackluster acoustics and an uncomfortable aesthetic.

Creative Loafing, if you fault an upstart venue for booking popular music to make people aware of the site and generate excitement, you’re out of your mind. If you think “dubstep built Terminal West” you obviously haven’t done your homework.

Ultimately it should be noted, following recent layoffs of Creative Loafing’s remaining worthwhile writers  (and later asking them to continue working after firing them,) one would not expect valuable business insight to come from the former Atlanta independent news institution.

Established as one of America’s leading drum and bass and dubstep producers with a discography that includes Ram Recordings, Human Imprint, and Subway Recordings – Rotella reaches for a midtempo sound in a nod to the styles popularized by artists such as Gemmy, Silkie, or Joker in the two selections that mark Edgewoode’s début on Deceast.

2012 already proves busy for Edgewoode as he plans a forthcoming release on Atlanta’s Embassy Recordings highlighting remixes of the label’s earlier releases. Additionally Rotella has partnered up with fellow long-time Atlanta DJ ‘Double Nil’ in launching Service, a new weekly music and food event at the Sound Table to promote the Edgewoode sound.

Fast Company is reporting that the Hipstamatic  Photography app will soon offer direct integration for sharing photos to photo sharing app Instagram

Understood by many as rival applications, the move is interesting from a social networking standpoint; showing Instagram values its role as a photo sharing platform more than a vanity app for adding lomography affects to photos taken on mobile devices.

One of the fastest growing social networks, Instagram boasts a user-base of over 27 million users, expected to continue to grow rapidly as the company recently announced it’s plans to support Android devices.

I have had the pleasure of working with Greg Mike and ABV Gallery in the rebranding of Heavyweight A/V‘s Atlanta Dubstep business unit. Utilizing his signature style, he helped us develop an unique and instantly recognizable image to represent us.

Additionally, Greg Mike deserves credit through the creation of the ABV Gallery, which serves as the brick-and-mortar home of his design firm as well as an incubator for upcoming street and urban artists in the Atlanta area, especially through his series of Drink and Doodle events that encourage collaboration and creation from the city’s artists.

According to a post by ZDNet, Netflix plans to show the discussions in a format a bit different from their original format – opting to group talks together into 90 minute segments covering general topics such as nature, technology, biological sciences, and the arts.

For those unaware, TED is a non-profit initiative devoted to what it calls ‘ideas worth spreading.’ The talks which can range from a few minutes to more than an hour can cover everything from anecdotal stories, to in-depth discussions on sociology, technology, and all subjects in between. Getting to TED Talks for the normal person is quite cost-restrictive; VentureBeat estimated US$7500 as a typical expectation for attendees.

Martyn‘s 3024 label keeps 2012 moving with it’s latest release from masked techno stalwart Redshape. The two tracks selected for this release ‘Throw In Dirt’ and the b-side ‘The Land’ exhibit a more soulful Detroit influence than Redshape’s previous remix contributions to 3024, in that they are colder, citing a markedly Berlin influence. This latest release, heavy in soul and hi-hat trickery, make it clear to see why it merits attention on this site.

The release is available now in digital formats in all reputable online shops, as well as 12″ for the vinyl inclined.

A wonderful example showing the value of presenting data in a valuable way to your users. App interactions have been an essential aspect of the Facebook experience for years now, however the recent changes have created measurable growth and adoption rates for a number of fringe networks such as Goodreads, and Pinterest.

The growth of apps that allow you to ‘publish to Facebook’ and the Timeline concept have helped grow Facebook into an online habit clearinghouse. When you consider Facebook is now the world’s largest online photo repository, seeing them broadening to such an undefined scope is, at the very least, interesting to watch.

Shortstack: Tell a bit about yourself for readers who are not familiar with you yet.

Skriptah: I have produced for around 7 years now. Back around the 8th grade I wanted to be a drummer really bad, but I am -50dB deaf and my parents knew I would shred too loud.

Shortstack: Who are your main influences when it comes to production, what was the stuff that compelled you into the sound you’re on now?

Skriptah: Would say back around ’05 that I was really into Dillinja, Phace, Spor, Noisia, and Evol Intent.
I produced a lot of DNB; it was really one of the only genres that really interested me. The default project bpm of FL Studio is 140, and I use to love doing half time dnb in FL Studio…one day I forgot to up the bpm, ended up doing half time 140 and it felt right. Don’t get me wrong, this was when dubstep had been around for a while – I just hadn’t heard it yet.

Shortstack: Now that you have been listening a while, where do you see your sound?

Skriptah: Pushing the more deeper darker sound — the whole “dungeon” sound is growing now, I like this fresh take on older sounding dubstep.

Shortstack: Favorite food for inspiration in the studio?

I assume most everybody reading this blog is well aware of Africa Hitech, the combination of Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek pushing the boundaries and bpms ever higher. I would suggest you also get to know The Drake Hotel, which I was fortunate enough to visit and stay in earlier this year. It’s a small spot with about a dozen rooms, incredible drinks and food and obviously a nightclub downstairs (The Underground) that pulls in some cutting edge talent.

At the behest of many, Whistla takes a short respite from the swivel vibe to put together an essential collection of classics of deeper and darker tunes well fitted to the colder weather and shorter days ahead. If I was going to put together a ‘best of’ set, this is pretty close; ‘Plate,’ ‘Nomad,’ ’1st Dynasty’ were all tunes I fell in love with when I first discovered the genre. This one has been making the rounds lately, and it has been a while since my last update – I felt something a little more light-hearted would be a good segue back into some new content.

Time lapse sequences of photographs taken by Ron Garan, Satoshi Furukawa and the crew of expeditions 28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October, 2011, who to my knowledge shot these pictures at an altitude of around 350 km. All credit goes to them.

An ambitious release reaching around one hour, the album is versatile – not completely being on the side of headphone listening or completely dancefloor centric Unity shows the ability to have crossover appeal without resorting to being a self-referencing caricature.

The highlight for me on the release is undoubtably Ridin The Hype, a collab with vocalist Trim, however Unity will bring appeal to fans of Girl Unit, or the lighter side of Starkey’s most recent output. Available now in all finer shops you can get an album sampler, or preview the albums closing track Don’t Cry In My Bed on Soundcloud.

A bit of a different sound than expected from these two; the self-titled full length from Author brings smooth late-night vibe to contrast the usually upbeat and energetic productions from Sparrow and Ruckspin. Replete with soulful brass parts reminiscent of Good Looking Records’ Cookin’ imprint.

No attention to details spared here; the two producer’s alternate lives crafting sound-system focused tunes is not lost here. With strong focus paid to the soundscapes each track paints, the tracks are undeniably deep however, hardly any would seem out of place in the mellower hours of the dancehall.

In preparation of the full-length’s release on 14 November 2001, the group has made the studio mix below available via Soundcloud.

Who Run It Podcast feat. Sonkin / Krueger / Shortstack [Direct Download]

Embassy Recordings presents its next release from Wheez-ie, the production alias of Matt Mauldin. Based at Berklee School of Music via Houston, TX, EMB008 brings the producers penchant for fast-paced frantic rhythms to light. Bubbling drums, deep 808 bass, and carefully crafted vocals lay the foundations of his originals. “Keep Yer Chin Up” and “Barefoot BIlly” with intense rhythm sections are a decidedly tamer beast than the sheer mayhem found in the release’s climactic “House Ball.”

Remixes from the legendary DJ Assault and San Francisco’s Frite Nite founder Salva offer slower groove-focused reinterpretations of Wheez-ie’s furious productions. The contrast between the originals and remixes on this release offer a unique blend that gives the release a wide appeal.

For fans of MachineDrum and Africa Hi-Tech, EMB008 will be a welcome addition for any bass-music fan’s arsenal.

The show took place at a small (by Phish show standards) 10,000 person venue, quite a bit different from the near 100,000 in attendance at Coventry, and thankfully the shows were a lot more enjoyable not just for the fact that it was 1/10th the size but also the band sounding better than they did four years earlier.

Wednesday involved myriad travel throughout the state of Vermont, thankfully because Kim was able to procure tickets for the show, but also as a result of the road closures resulting from the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. I was fortunate to get a nice view of the state during daylight hours, and fortunately not limiting myself to the short stretch of I-91 as last time. It took a couple of different routes before we finally arrived to pick up our tickets in Royalton. Royalton was a nice way for me to see what Vermont has to offer outside of the context of Burlington, a nice small town and a visit to the local co-op gave me an opportunity to eat a delicious wrap with fresh cucumbers, carrots, cheese and a creamy beet hummus.

A quick return back up the interstate got us into the show during the second track only having missed Chalk Dust and that’s not terribly disappointing at all. Being able to see Phish in such an intimate venue for the first and likely only time was great. Combine that with top-notch sound even under the pavilion, and a lovely Vermont evening with a full moon things fell into place quite nicely.

The evening ended with a quick visit to downtown Burlington, passing by haunts like Higher Ground and Nectar’s and a stop for beer and post-show food. The next morning we made a return to eat one of the best breakfasts I have had in a long time at Magnolia Bistro and a walk down Burlington’s Church Street to sample more local fare.

A ferry ride across Lake Champlain got us back across to NY state for one last evening and a day trip to the Eastman House / Norman Rockwell exhibit before heading back to Atlanta.

Thanks much to my gracious hosts, drivers, concierge, companions, on my trip. Western NY is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots to hit when getting away from Atlanta!

A question I have always pondered, why many notable producers seem to come from the world of bass players. Brian Wilson, Randy Jackson, Roger Waters… regardless of if you enjoy the music these people made, there is something about the fidelity of the recordings they produced.

Dom Tarasek is a Sheffield based producer whose tracks were first brought to my attention about a year ago when his single ‘Eastern Bloc’ premiered on Joe Nice’s Gourmet Beats radio show. With a nod from Joe Nice, releases on Black Box and with forthcoming material coming in the next couple of weeks on Mala’s Deep Medi  imprint, it seems assured Commodo’s is at the helm of a prolific future in the weightier side of the dubstep arena.[*]

Shortstack: Give some background for those who might confuse you with the last track of a vintage dance record, since you are clearly not one of those.

Locked Groove:  I’m a young producer from Belgium, doing whatever im in the mood for. Mostly house and techno, possibly doing different stuff in the future as well. I chose the name Locked Groove because in the beginning that was all there was to my tunes. Just a groove i sampled from an old disco, house, techno record and just looped it for 5-8 minutes with loads of fx. I still sample old records, but try using them more constructively. I’ll sample single kicks, percussion etc and make up my own locked groove with it. I’m also in the process of making a ton of actual locked grooves and hope someone will be so kind to press them up on vinyl in the future.

SS: Tell us a bit about the mix you provided

LG: I chose not to feature my own tunes, most of them are forthcoming and I’m keeping them low profile. All the tunes here are something i would play out live. My sets balance between groove and soul or rawness, it all depends. I tried to touch both sides in this mix.

SS: Any word on where and when we can expect forthcoming Locked Groove releases will be available to the public?

LG: There will be an EP available in the near feature somewhere between November and January, on HotFlush Recordings. I can say it will be a four track EP featuring two deep house cuts and two rugged techno tunes.

New deep sounds from Commodo, a young upcoming producer from UK who I was first made aware of when Joe Nice played his single ‘Eastern Bloc‘ Commodo’s tunes hearken the classic minimal sounds that typify ‘classic dubstep.’ The young producers style is obviously making a lasting impression on the right heads; ‘Uprise’ and ‘Saracen’ will soon be finding their way into your crate via Mala’s Deep Medi Musik.

Deep weighty tunes that hearken the classic techniques of early Pinch releases, and the minimalist depth popularized by Kryptic Minds and Lurka, it’s not surprising  Commodo’s tracks are seeing plays from Joe Nice, Youngsta, and although I cannot compare myself to those two in the style department, I like to that we share a similar aesthetic expectation for ‘dubstep.’

I have been wanting to do something more in depth on Commodo for quite some time now, and I promise it is coming very soon, but more information that closer to when it is available, and it is now available as an interview and download on Sonic Router

‘Angry Acid’ has been getting a lot of love on our radio show since it was first finished, an aptly named acid influenced banger that clocks in closer to 140 than most of its acid influenced counterparts. The tune is huge, as in, Spinal Tap arena-rock loud — and definitely commands the attention of any dancefloor.

The flip side ‘French Science’ offers a nice contrast with a much slower track that in typical Distal fashion utilizes myriad sounds that make pegging it down to any definable genre nearly impossible.

The release notes describe this as existing somewhere between Aphex Twin and Drexciya, quite an intense comparison but when through this release, the realization that Distal’s music defines its own styles more than falling into existing niches makes the comparison valid. Also, check out that artwork…. seriously how can you resist owning a 12″ with that ravetastic design!?

Both philosophically and technically, Samsara will build on the team’s earlier work. Expanding on the themes of interconnection and transcendence which they developed in Baraka (1992), Samsara will focus on the cycle of Birth, Death and Rebirth, from the perspectives of many cultures. Neither a traditional documentary, nor a travelogue, Samsara will take the form of a nonverbal, guided meditation that will transform viewers in countries around the world, as they are swept along on a journey of the soul. Through powerful images, the film will illuminate the links between humanity and the rest of nature, showing how our life cycle mirrors the rhythm of the planet. Samsara will be part of a 21st Century mythology, revealing parts of our imperilled planet never before photographed. It will combine original and indigenous music with dance as well as other contemporary art forms.

In addition to the ubiquitous gremlin laugh, Terror Danjah has tapped the vocal work of Ruby Lee-Ryder to add soulfulness rugged basslines and extremely percussive drums that have become Terror trademarks. Lee-Ryder’s vocals balance the track’s fierce drums, creating a sound smoother than many tracks in Terror Danjah’s repertoire, yet not excessively ‘pop.’ The release also features a remix provided by UK Funky specialist Roska that unfortunately does not share the staying power of the original.

A new mix uploaded from HotFlush contributor, Nihal Ramchandani, a Texas transplant residing in NYC, an upcoming selector to watch in 2011. I had the pleasure of meeting Nihal on my most recent trip to NYC. The same friends I visited have since launched Reconstrvct, an event dedicated to ‘low frequency with decency.’ Nihal’s selections focus on the sparse sounds of techno and house, and like myself he’s an admitted Basic Channel over-indulger.

For this mix, I intended to expand upon the concept I presented for my hour-long opening set at the inaugural night of Reconstrvct this past weekend featuring V.I.V.E.K, Joe Nice, Dave Q, and TrueNature. It was recorded in one take at home in the studio with mostly vinyl, some Serato, and a Xone 62.

Reconstrvct presented a special opportunity for me to play out records that embraced the dub and UK garage origins of dubstep while simultaneously exploring fresh territory with more contemporary producers. The Morgan provided the ideal setting with its beautiful, stark interior: brick walls, wood flooring, minimal lighting, a weighty sound system, and a crowd that had been eagerly awaiting the return of such a night ever since Dub War ended last summer after its five year run. To have been a part of the first Reconstrvct six years after Dave Q and Joe Nice brought this sound to America was a huge honor for me.

You could say I get a little carried away with Moritz von Oswald / Mark Ernestus records for the first portion of the mix, but I’ll just call it a “tribute” to them. Enjoy :)

Intellectual Ventures owns a huge portfolio of patents. Quite possibly they also have some sort of patent that covers streaming music over the internet. Intellectual Ventures makes money through a sort of protection racket that helps Spotify defend themselves against companies like PacketVideo. For a considerable fee, a company can access Intellectual Venture’s storehouse of patents and use them defensively against companies claiming patent infringement. [Source]

An interesting read in the online version of The Economist regarding the hazards of patent law and it’s effect of stifling economic growth in the United States. Patents make sense to cover actually concrete concepts, and while I am for intellectual property rights for artists, IP law is getting out of hand. “Patents Against Prosperity” [via The Economist]

I have also decided to share a new article via eWeek citing similar issues beginning to affect the mobile phone industry showing similar issues affecting that sector’s development as well.

This is a problem that is not limiting itself to just software niche of the technology field. Monsanto is notorious for aggressively pursuing farmers caught growing or saving GMO seed violating their license. If you are not aware it is essentially legal to patent a DNA sequence, that will naturally reproduce itself without any human interaction.

Most recently a group of Haitian farmers, armed with knowledge of these practices, burned 475 tons of Monsanto seed in protest. Rather than take and grow the GMO foodstuffs, they destroyed the property entirely, protection from the fear of being accused of stealing. A video documenting their efforts is available beneath this article.

Arguably, musicians and composers were ahead of the curve on this; Paul McCartney infamously assisted Michael Jackson in this investment advice. Condoning the behaviors of companies like PacketVideo, Intellectual Ventures, and Monsanto discourage innovation. Protection is cheaper than development.

The opening track ‘Masks’ shows Martyn exploring a deeper house sound more like his material more recently than the sound typified on the ‘Great Lengths‘ release of 2009. Evolution is always a wonderful thing; Martyn’s sound has undeniably evolved over the course of his career as both a DJ and producer. The release also comes with two mixes of the single ‘Viper’, the ‘Ghost People Edit,’ and ‘London Arches Edit.’ Two jacking interpretations on a more upbeat house vibe with melodic elements that are gritty and displaying percussion sounds different from what I have become accustomed to when I think of ‘Martyn drums.’ The patterns are fresh and upbeat and the sounds hearken a more classic era creating an interesting balance. Definitely a release that is worth picking up either digitally today, or pre-ordering the vinyl ahead of time on the Ninja Tune NinjaShop.

In an effort to mobilize Twitter users to call for #compromise in the Debt Ceiling debate, the @BarackObama account let out a barrage of tweets listing Republican registered Congressional representatives with Twitter accounts that the US populace should encourage to reach a compromise.

Of course, for two houses of government x 50 states x 140-character limit means, a lot of tweeting. It is estimated that the @BarackObama account lost about 40,000 followers during that time-frame. Yes, I’m sure some of them are following again too, I can concede that. Hilariously, it also served as a presidential #followfriday as many Republican representatives thanked the White House for new followers.

I am not here to suggest that Twitter followers is a solid metric for Presidential approval, instead — with a large sample size, the effects of spamming become much easier to measure.

By now, Kromestar’s versatility is unquestioned. With undeniably aggressive tracks such as ‘Attenshun,‘ and a majority of the selections on his first LP ‘The Other Side,’ he is able to balance himself with releases like the more recent full-length release ‘Colourful Vibrations,’ emphasizing on the minimal half-step sounds of dubstep.

Kromestar redefines his prowess again on his latest release, a collaborative effort along veteran producer Om Unit in a two track release launching the Cosmic Bridge label. The releases tracks ‘Solar Cycle’ and ‘Merkabah’ use groove more akin to Flying Lotus or Lunice productions than what one typically expects from either of the two credited on the release.

Both tracks exhibit the slow dubbed synth sounds that typify many Kromestar productions, combined here with crushed low-bit synth sounds. Two tracks that are definitely a lot more patient and cerebral than what many have come to expect from either of these two. Not expecting either of these to ‘mash up the dance’ but definitely a solid release from two solid producers whose range make them continually difficult to define.

The releases title track ‘You Gotta Do You’ is a slowly evolving acid house track, heavy on Roland samples and a jacking clap-snare pattern on top of ambling filtered 303. The highlight for me however is the b-side of the release ‘Open Your Eyes,’ channeling the percussive sounds of Chicago with the distorted grime basslines more reminiscent of producers like Big$hot. Although citing these influences the track hardly falls into the realm of formulaic; XXXY manages to push the track into jungle territory by wedging in the classic Amen break. By juxtaposing grime bass with classic jungle era breaks and atmospheres is a refreshing interpretation.

Raz Mesinai

Putting together the details from the Twitter account, Raz Mesinai’s Facebook, and his recent Resident Advisor Interview, the graphic novel features an intro produced by Kode9 + Space Ape, word content provided by Mike Ladd, and artistic styling from Erosie, who many are familiar with as the designer behind the artwork for Martyn‘s 3024 label.

As the RA interview suggests, the Dubfiction Comics project looks to extend beyond just the ‘The Heretic of Ether’ project, with a graphic novel interpretation of Kode9′s ‘Black Sun‘ album as well.

 I try to picture this one person having their own experience, and I picture them way in the back of the room. And I try to remember how insignificant my experience is, and how people’s experiences with music are their own thing.

So a lot of people don’t understand Phish‘s music, think their fans are ridiculous, and a bunch of other stuff that I’m not really interested in talking about here. I don’t hold that against anybody because it’s no big secret there is a lot of music and music fans I am not particularly fond of myself. But anybody who has any true connection to music will undoubtedly take at least one thing away from this excellent interview with Phish’s guitarist Trey Anastasio featured in The Believer Magazine.

Even if you don’t care for their music, no independent musician today can deny their self-made success and technical ability.

Stephen SNF is a man of many faces: a writer for Big Up Magazine and former blogger for dubstepped.net, a DJ with radio shows on both Sub.FM and Dubstep.FM as well as many local appearances, a former college radio DJ and a Ph. D. in biochemistry. The San Francisco dubstep scene was integral for many of these activities with classic dubstep nights like Narco.HZ, Grime City and Surya Dub bringing worldwide talent to SF since 2006. While currently on a bit of a music hiatus due to the daily demands of research, he’s happily produced a look forward and backwards in this mix for the SF series for J’aime le Dubstep.

Tex’s Tacos has quickly come on the Atlanta Food Truck scene separating itself from Yumbii by offering more traditional southwestern offerings including a wonderful pastor taco and what is the most memorable carne asada I’ve had in years. Special mention also to their ‘lime fries’ unfortunately not pictured here – Tex’s specialty item

The truck is staffed by Mac and Harrison, who describe themselves on their website as “two compadres passionate about this food, and set on bringing the best of our favorite Tex-Mex fare from deep in the heart of the Lone Star State to you” and it is apparent in the rich flavors of their food.

Tex's Tacos : Carne Asada

My personal favorite menu item is the carne asada taco, hands down. The flavor of the beef balances well with creamy cheese and guacamole, admittedly the meat is hard to see in the above photo but trust it is excellent. Also, as evident by the photo above, the crew at Tex’s does not skimp on filling, food trucks are never an expensive endeavour typically but these guys always make sure you get your money’s worth.

Recently, they have started offering soft-corn tortillas in addition to the flour based ones – something I was hoping would happen. The flavor is rich, and anybody who has started eating their tacos with soft corn tortillas likely will never switch back – this isn’t something that is featured on the menu but they have assured me it is available by request.

Tex’s also offers a shredded BBQ taco, and understanding the strict loyalties southerners have to where their BBQ comes from, the truck is proud to serve Atlanta’s own Lowcountry Barbecue. Personally, for me, if you come here for the pork and you don’t have the pastor – you are cheating yourself.

"Dying Is Not A Crime" -J. Kevorkian

Today sees the passing of one of modern history’s great champion for personal freedom and human rights, Jack Kevorkian. I understand my politics at times are difficult for some to understand but hear me out before you dismiss this post based on what is not really a controversial statement at all.

Known to many as ‘Doctor Death’ for his public endorsement and practice of voluntary euthanasia. Much attention is paid in the United States in the handling of abortion issues, and how it pertains to government regulation over the physical bodies of its citizens.

The Supreme Court of the United States issued the following opinion in it’s 1992 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey citing the Fourteenth Amendment:

“If the right of privacy means anything, it is the right of the individual, married or single, to be free from unwarranted governmental intrusion into matters so fundamentally affecting a person as the decision whether to bear or beget a child.”

I, for one, do not see any fundamental distinctions between freedom to choose what is best for someone’s own body as it pertains to abortion, euthanasia, getting a piercing or tattoo, or even wearing a hijab. These issues are not within the scope of the powers given by the people to our government. Understandably, euthanasia, abortion, or any of these are not one-size-fits-all solutions but no founding father would have willingly waived these decisions to an appointed authority. Additionally, with the freedom over healthcare becoming a keystone issue in US Politics in recent years, it seems counter-intuitive that we should continue to support selective freedom in selecting healthcare options.

Rest In Peace to a misunderstood man who was not afraid to take a controversial stand and surrender his freedom hoping to expand individual rights.

Taken from the Very Large Telescope array in Chile’s Atacama Desert. An eight minute time-lapse video of the night sky. The video is also uploaded in HD format so I recommend you click and watch in full-resolution.

The Very Large Telescope (VLT) is made up of four separate optical telescopes (the Antu telescope, the Kueyen telescope, the Melipal telescope, and the Yepun telescope) organized in an array formation, built and operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) at the Paranal Observatory on Cerro Paranal, a 2,635m high mountain in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. Each telescope has an 8.2m aperture. The array is complemented by four movable Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs) of 1.8m aperture. Working together in interferometric mode, the telescopes can achieve an angular resolution of around 1 milliarcsecond, meaning it could distinguish the gap between the headlights of a car located on the Moon.[1]

Congratulations to XLR8R Magazine on consistently procuring excellent podcasts and having recently reached the 200 mark. In celebration they are offering up two excellent looking mixes from Richie Hawtin (aka. Plastikman) and Mala of Digital Mystikz fame.

Located at the 1927 Emery Street (behind Willy’s near the Howell Mill / Collier Rd intersection). the park plans to offer space for diners to sample offerings from up to ten different food trucks. This is a change of pace from the situation a year ago when the City of Atlanta was a lot more litigious towards food trucks. Additionally, it is good to see some attention being paid to offering food truck gatherings outside of corporate business lunch hours. As someone who works ‘OTP’ in Atlanta I unfortunately miss the lunch gatherings many food trucks regularly make at Stove Works and Atlantic Station.

Of all the things ‘social networking’ and namely Twitter have made more practical, food trucks rank among my favorite. If you are unfamiliar with any of the vendors tonight I have provided links to their pages below. Read up, and hopefully see you out tonight for the big launch!

Absolutely lucked out on parking, as @eatitAtlanta pointed out, the crowd seemed to overwhelm the location pretty quickly and this seemed reinforced by the fact that showing up at 7:45 most vendors were out of at least one item and by 8:15-8:30 it was ‘slim pickings.’ That being said, I am glad I went and I am looking forward to the upcoming weeks to see how it all irons itself out.

Quite an eclectic selection on these as the Captain takes us on an excursion of some midtempo beats and some choice selections from Lunice, Modeselektor, and more.

While not exactly ‘brand-new’ it is worth mentioning here that the Library of Congress has made a large collection of its catalog available for streaming online.  They have started the archives off with a massive back-catalog of RCA Victor dating from 1902-1925.

The archive plans to add Columbia, OKeh, and hopefully more to the online database.

My disdain for the handling of the conflict, especially the Srebrenica Massacre is something I have mentioned on this site before; the international response during the war undoubtably has left a long-standing impression on me.

This is major news, and I find it disappointing it is not a top headline on more news sources this morning; Mladić is responsible for masterminding one of the larger genocides of my lifetime. Additionally, the arrest opens the door for Serbian entry into the European Union, as they have demanded Mladić be brought to justice before any considerations began.

Seriously, the amount of quality music coming from grime label Butterz is unimaginable, especially considering they almost give away as much free music as Napster did in the late 90s. One of the label’s highlights has been their monthly ZIP file, featuring a bunch of freebies from the likes of Royal-T, TRC, S-X, and other regulars on the Butterz label.

Today they dropped the June ZIP file, which comes highly recommended. Free, quality, grime. U daft?

Embassy takeover at Watchtower Wobble

This past Monday, the good people of Bassfaced posted their weekly Cloudcast series curated this week by good friend of mine and the Embassy crew, DJ Rodan from New Paltz, NY. As noted in their interview, my first encounter with Rodan was at Dub War NYC about this time last year, where shortly afterwards I was kidnapped to come share a timeslotwith him at his now defunct, but legendary ‘Watchtower Wobble’ night.

Not enough can be said for the knowledge Rodan and his ‘Crown & Anchor’ crew have brought to the SUNY dominated town on New Paltz. Every chance I’ve had to play there even the most obscure and deep tracks elicit a strong vibe with their crowds, which have developed an exquisite taste for music in large part to Dan’s efforts.

Deep Medi Musik continues its exploration of deep quintessential sounds with its latest from V.I.V.E.K. Already well-established on the label with “Kulture” b/w “Meditation Rock” and the Feel It EP, V.I.V.E.K. expounds this with two tracks, distinctly pure dubstep in contrasting ways.

The a-side of the release, “Pulse,” takes the stance of the release’s ‘system tune.’ An intro built on atmospheres, telephone ringers, and EKG tones erupts into a deep wash of bass pulsation. Razor-sharp percussion carries “Pulse” along to the breakdown where the soundstage is lost in a slowly decaying haze of bit-reduction, contributing to the the bleak futuristic feeling of the track. “Pulse,” while welcome on the iPod, was clearly not written for it.

“Roots” holds the b-side of the release and not to be over-looked, confidently showcases V.I.V.E.K.’s take on the ‘eyes-down’ aesthetic that often is the hallmark of Deep Medi Musik releases. With rolling percussion that is clearly at home on this label, accented with dubbed horns and sparsely, yet carefully placed synth pads. “Roots” is a slow and methodical in its unwinding however, it is still undeniably captivating.

Deep Medi Musik again reminds us that unapologetic dubstep is still as musically and emotionally compelling as ever, and despite what critics, nay-sayers, and punters might attempt to preach, the end is not in sight.

It has been a number of days since my last update here, and not for lack of updates. As noted in the previous post, I have been fortunate enough to step away from real life for a moment and enjoy some much-needed and well overdue vacation time visiting friends in NYC, Western NY and two forays into Toronto.

It was excellent to have an opportunity to get to Rochester and eat a bunch of local cuisine, as well as getting to Toronto and being able to stay in both The Drake Hotel and Thompson Hotel Toronto. These trips gave me ample opportunity to see the city, eat at The Black Hoof twice, and be able to catch one of the few James Blake live shows on this side of the Atlantic.  Many thanks to Kim- for carting me around the whole time, and providing some valuable insight from someone who has made the Toronto trip before.

Leaving where I left off previously, New Paltz and NYC were excellent hosts as always. I had a wonderful time being able to tag alongside Rodan and Bloom at Bacchus, for some slower beats than normal as well as an opportunity to familiarize myself with some of the offerings of Victory Brewing Company as they had a tasting going on during the event. Following the brief stay in New Paltz it was back down to the city to catch Francois K and JOYO. Much thanks to Bassfaced for the hospitality while in the city. Also, excellent to have an opportunity to meet up with Wheez-ie, Nihal, Archie Pelago, and the handful of other northeast crew who I’ve communicated with forever but had not met before. Good times being able to catch Kode9, Sepalcure, Lone, Appleblim, Francois K, JOYO, Spatial, and a whole lot more in such a short span of time. NYC, you are spoiled when it comes to club music in America.

Following this it was off to Rochester, NY for a handful of days with one of my oldest friends, to see the town where my mother came from, how their food is, brewing beer – and a visit to Toronto, to do more of the same (except, brewing beer.)

It mostly involved eating a ton of food, and being extremely lazy, and vintage arcade games at Rochester’s Strong Museum of Play. Gluttony and hedonism should definitely be an part of any vacation and we wasted no opportunities in April or May making it happen. I will spare you any further mundane details and recommend you have glance at the photo gallery below.

Lee ‘Scratch’ Pretty : Over 75 Years, From Dub to Dubstep

Thursday night, before leaving, things got started as Mount Kimbie performed live in Atlanta at the King Plow Arts Center. I had the fortunate chance to play after the headlining set, a portion of which is downloadable as this month’s 1111 Agency Podcast.

Arriving in NYC early Friday evening I linked up with Bassfaced, and Hirshi and Kroba from Archie Pelago and headed down to The Bunker’s ‘Bass Mutations’ party at Brooklyn’s Public Assembly. An event that is a part of the NYC side of Unsound Festival, it was a night that featured DJ and Live sets from the likes of Dave Q, Badawi, Lone, Sepalcure, Dorian Concept, Kode9, Appleblim, Kink, and more. Arriving at the club at 11PM, Dave Q was getting things warmed up nicely in the backroom with a set that reached across a wide range of BPMs, and gave me the opportunity to hear a number of Distal tracks on a more than ample soundsystem. Additionally, the night gave me an opportunity to finally link up with Nihal, Wheez-ie, Sonkin, and a handful of other northeastern based music friends that I had yet to meet in the flesh. All and all an excellent night out with amazing sets from everybody I had the opportunity to see, there is nothing that I can add that probably hasn’t already been said a thousand times before.

Saturday, starting off slow after an eight-hour club excursion, found us at Dough sampling some gourmet doughnuts to get the day started before heading over to Halcyon for some record shopping then up to New Paltz to DJ with Rodan and Bloom. A good evening there with the Victory Beer crew and us three tagging off loungier house and techno tracks all night long. Definitely a different vibe than the last time I visited town, but as enjoyable nonetheless.

Monday, after a sushi lunch with some old Avara/Distributed.net crew, we made our way to Cielo for the 8th year birthday celebration of Deep Space NYC hosted by Francois K with special guest JOYO (née Joy Orbison), who played an intense 2+ hr set that was a perfect cap to my time in the city.

Now, I am laying low in western NY – brewing beer with kim-, and chumprock, enjoying a nice change of pace from nearly a straight week of clubbing in NYC and New Paltz, and laying low before heading to Toronto on Thursday afternoon. I am sure more will follow soon!

Oh, and if you are in Atlanta, get over to King Plow tonight for the Surefire Showcase featuring Moldy, Pearson Sound / Ramadanman, Zed Bias / Maddslinky, and Distal.

First on tap will be Bass Mutations, a part of this year’s Unsound Festival, bringing together the likes of Kode9, Appleblim, Badawi, and the list of names on the left. Any way you slice it, it’s a definite who’s who in bass music currently.

It is a shame that the United Nations is far better at resourcing architects than they are peacekeepers. I will spare everybody a Bush : Iraq/Afghanistan :: Obama : Libya/Afghanistan comparison. What I would like to bring attention to however is the United Nations’ recent history when it comes to it’s “Peacekeeping Efforts” in ares under political turmoil.

Below I have paraphrased from Wikipedia and other sources some esteemed highlights. I would like to point out that all the examples provided below happened during my life, at a time I can vividly remember. Most likely yours too. These events are not far removed in our collective history. As the US, and other countries enter Libya under similar pretenses described below under the guise of NATO and the UN alike, hopefully we are not doomed to make the mistakes of our past.

UNPROFOR - The United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR), was the first United Nations peacekeeping force in Croatia and in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Yugoslav wars.

As of mid-2003, the Demographic Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICTY estimated that 102,622 deaths resulted from the Bosnian conflict, with 55,261 of those people being civilians and 47,360 being military personnel at their time of death.^[11] The authors of this report say that the actual death toll may be slightly higher.^{[68] [Wikipedia]}

I attribute  the majority of theblame to our lack  of aggressiveness  and resolve in reacting to the violations of the belligerents.  The personality of the Sector Commander combined with the fear of incurringfriendly  casualties caused  us to cede to the desires of the belligerents  when our backs were up against the  wall.  Each time we abandoned  our hard line position, we lost credibility and face with the Serb  and Croat leaders. These leaders respected mental and physical toughness and expected  us to  rigidly enforce the articles of the Vance Plan.  Once  we displayed weakness  in our resolve, it was a “slippery slope”  until we virtually lost control  of the Sector. UNAMIR – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda

Among the first targets of the genocide were Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana and 10 Belgian members of 2nd Commando Battalion, the Paracommando Regimentoperating as part of UNAMIR. These troops were murdered after handing over their weapons to Rwandan government troops. They were advised to do so by their battalion commander who was unclear on the legal issues with authorising them to defend themselves, even though they had already been under fire for approximately two hours.

The inquiry concluded that the overriding failure in international community’s response was the lack of resources and political will, as well as errors of judgement as to the nature of the events in Rwanda. Expressing deep remorse over the failure to prevent the genocide in Rwanda, the Secretary-General, in a statement on 16 December, said that he fully accepted the conclusions of the report. He welcomed the emphasis which the inquiry had put on the lessons to be learned, and its recommendations to ensure that the United Nations and the international community could and would act to prevent or halt any other such catastrophe in the future. It seems the topic of ‘dubstep’ has been a popular topic of conversation in our city lately. As somebody who has been involved in the positive promotion of this in Atlanta from the beginning, I would appreciate the opportunity to lend a constructive retort to the article ‘Last Night Dubstep Molly Saved My Life‘ that appeared in your publication starting 2-March 2011. Please allow me to tell a different story about dubstep in Atlanta to contrast your example.

Two years ago, a group of ten like-minded individuals came together with the goal of bringing performers of a niche style of music to Atlanta. This ‘meeting of the minds’ was nothing glamorous; a mere group of friends hoping to pool resources and promote a relatively unknown style of music. In February of 2009, Bazzaar was the host to Dutch native 2562. It was, by all accounts, a successful event that brought out a wide selection of mature and responsible adults to a nightclub to enjoy a musical performance. Not that much different from happens one doorway north from Bazzaar’s former location.

Two years later Atlanta Dubstep is a licensed and legitimate business in the state of Georgia. It is an organization that, while self-sufficient, does not make nearly enough to support the members who make the events happen. We have been fortunate enough the success of our events afforded us the opportunity to purchase our own soundsystems, and continue booking an internationally recognized roster of talent. Despite all this hard work and gain, at the end of the day all the members of the group are professionals beyond our involvement in nightlife, we engage these efforts out of our own desire. Nobody in Atlanta Dubstep is reaping any personal gain financially or otherwise as a result of organizing events. Thankfully, Atlanta has been very receptive to our efforts – and as member of the group I am extremely grateful for the growth that our events attendees have helped us achieve. To anybody who is reading this who has supported Atlanta Dubstep, I hope we continue to delight everybody and you all understand how grateful we are of the support.

The organization, while not perfect, does strive for a high level of professionalism. With the name ‘Atlanta Dubstep,’ we realize how we present the group, and our events, to outside talent reflects upon our city. As a member of the group I have worked hard to make something that I am passionate about gain widespread exposure in Atlanta. We have worked hard as individuals and as a group to create a product and a brand that does its best to conduct itself in a professional manner, ensuring the safety of our patrons and ultimately the longevity of our events.

It pains me in a manner difficult to express in words to read the misrepresentation of other individuals’ hard work – undermining another’s efforts because writers portray non-music related activities occurring at what appeared to be an illegally held event. Now, I am not so naive that I believe these types of events do not exist, nor do I feign ignorance that some individuals may engage in seemingly questionable behavior. This is not accurately reporting the story the headline portrays, instead it devolves into sensationalism. Your website and publication has a ‘Sex & Vice’ section, also a ‘Comedy‘ section. If that is what this article intended to be and it was simply misfiled, then clearly this was all one big misunderstanding.

All this being said, my offer still stands. There is a great organization within Atlanta conducting ‘dubstep’ parties with some level of self-respect, and respect for their attendees, and our partners who make our events possible. I would appreciate an opportunity to show you a proper representation of mature, responsible dubstep oriented events that occur regularly in Atlanta. That is assuming of course your publication is interested in printing journalism, and a lazy attempt to mimic Hunter S. Thompson in the context of 2011 dance music.

Tracks like ‘Qawwali,’ ‘Widescreen,’ and ‘Battered‘ show that he lives what he preaches — moreover I have no qualms in freely admitting that the ‘Underwater Dancehall‘ full length on Pinch’s own Tectonic label might alone be the reason I am a fan of dubstep music. Although ‘wobble’ is often used pejoratively in many circles, none can deny that Pinch has expertly crafted the concept in a way that is intelligent, and classically ‘dub minded.’

This approach to sound gives his Tectonic label and his DJ sets a uniquely identifiable sound, one we have talked about in more than one post on this site. The high esteem of Pinch’s own productions combined with the Tectonic aesthetic, it is clear why Resident Advisor has tapped him for the latest installment to their podcast series. An excellent selection of tracks listed below, and as always a good short interview from the RA team with the artist on the RA page. To be expected, a wonderful mix effortless moving from the sounds of ambient, acid techno, traditional dubstep, and a host of inexplicable styles as well.

And, obviously, much respect to my good friend and Sub.FM radio partner Distal for having two of his original tracks appear in this mix from Pinch, including some bits that are forthcoming on the highly esteemed Tectonic label. Always excellent to see friends getting well-earned and well-deserved attention.

‘She Don’t Jack’ exists somewhere between Garage and house, the comparisons to Appleblim and Ramadanman’s ‘Void23′ seem somewhat appropriate. Although the track is not nearly as epic, perhaps due to the fact it’s not nearly as long, both seem to suggest a new movement in Bristol’s ever-evolving yet constantly influential sound. Extremely haunting, yet still dancefloor functional – a huge tune that was making noise online for obvious reasons. ‘Drunk On Sunday’ comes a bit more subdued than the previous, with a focus that is less on shuffling dance minded beats, a spare yet solid percussive beat carries the track’s rich bass sounds. Definite late-night stamina crew vibes on this one.

Bristol is clearly setting itself apart as one of the fore-runners of the house music sound with influences that clearly draw on the soulful / human aspects evident in the Detroit sound, however still maintaining a bleak vibe and garage influenced syncopations that are undeniably ‘un-American.’

Some might be surprised to find a mix from Reso on this site, given the breadth of most people’s knowledge of him is confined to his harder more aggressive sounds.
