Shortstack at Billionaire Bass Brawl (Video)

Aside

People asked if there was any footage from the Billionaire Bass Brawl first round last week at The Basement.

Here is a short video (audio NSFW in some places) of the event put together by The Freakbeat crew. Shouts to all supporting!

TFB Profiles Distal

Aside

New Earth Music HallFilmed following his performance at New Earth Music Hall the other week, The Freak Beat interviews Distal about his upcoming album Civilization.

Keep a look for a short cameo by yours truly during the obligatory brostep section of the interview, clearly a surprising time for me to voice an opinion.

Appreciation From The Editor

Shortstack [credit: IonPhoto]First things first, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to readers of this site old and new. It has been an interesting year for me both on and off this site.

During the beginning of the year I was unable to focus full attention to the site, however I cannot thank people enough for allowing to essentially ‘pick up where we left off‘ and continuing to support the site as things has smoothed out a bit recently.

Continue beneath the fold for more gratitude, looking forward for the site, and an exclusive  live dj mix of mine for you to download or stream.

DJ Nappy – Gimpmode Tribute Mix

Aside

DJ Nappy - A Tribute To GimpmodeA tribute mix from thugstep ambassador DJ Nappy, honoring the memory of the late Matthew “Gimpmode” Fox – one of the first people in Atlanta to embrace dubstep and push hard to make it an accepted style for Atlanta club-goers.

With a talent for blending hard-edged dubstep with  southern ‘trap’ style hip-hop, Gimpmode’s legacy can be heard in Atlanta DJs such as Mayhem and Heroes and Villains as well as the continuing work of groups like Atlanta Dubstep.

Thanks to DJ Nappy for recording this and Atlanta Dubstep on the original mention of this tribute to Gimpmode.

Corporate Rave Culture

Ultra Music Festival MiamiNew York Times goes in-depth on the rise of corporate funding for underground electronic dance music. Fresh off the heels of Ultra Music Festival last month, and the sentiments from PercussionLab last week, and a related post today, sharing this article felt appropriate.

The big dance festivals have built themselves into valuable brands, able to sell tickets on their name alone and the immersive audio-visual spectacle they present. One big company could bring together a handful of promoters and find economies of scale.[*]

A few things I found missing from the New York Times piece, I feel the writers failed to mention the amount of good corporate money fostering valuable contributions to the music industry.

Late Nite Tip (1-April 2012)

Here is the archive from Late Nite Tip hosted by Embassy Recordings on Sub.FM.

Due to the time change confusion, the show coming on after us ended up starting let which left us the ability to run for an extended three-hour show this time, allowing an extended jungle session from the Embassy crew.

April Fools fun in the first ten minutes but stick with it as the crew showcases exclusives from Clicks & Whistles, previews of the forthcoming Embassy release rom Sleepyhead, and Distal’s forthcoming Civilization LP

We have amended the post to include the full tracklisting as well

That One Time Bassnectar Blew My Mind

A worthwhile read from Percussion Lab on the madness that was Bassnectar at Ultra 2012. Don’t be mistaken, I am still not a fan of his style of music but one can hardly deny that he and a number of other seemingly fringe artists have pushed dubstep from forgotten clubs a few years ago into mainstream commercial music festivals and licensing in major films, movies, and advertisements.

Carl Sagan Cosmos Brostep Remix

Because somebody felt it necessary to do a brostep / dubstep remix of the theme from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos series, I decided I would share it with my readers. Or as the video so eloquently describes it, ‘Saganstep.’

Spin Covers Dubstep/Brostep Awards

Photo By Dan PrakopcykSpin Magazine offers this short, enjoyable, and pun-filled review of the brostep oriented US Dubstep Awards ceremony hosted this month in Atlantic City.

More than just a humorous treatise on dubstep, it also examines the issues of the event surrounding its poor planning and logistics issues.

A number of the people I know who attended were there are nominees or performers, so expectedly they made mostly favorable comments about the event, making this view from an outsider all that more interesting to read.

Dubstep Debacle: Atlantic City Awards Ceremony Wubs Crowd the Wrong Way

Terminal West Is Not A Rave Cave

Atlanta’s premier music destination in a converted iron and steel foundry, built primarily from reclaimed metals, wood and brick — and the coup de grâce, the original boiler as the centerpiece of the room and rooftop bar.

These are the only descriptions of Terminal West, King Plow’s new music venue, worth reading in Creative Loafing’s recent recap of the Terminal West launch, titled Terminal West at King Plow: The house that dubstep built.
