Thermal / Birthday : 9-Sept @ Lava

helixflier2 Thermal / Birthday : 9 Sept @ LavaI am absolutely looking forward to this month’s Thermal at Lava Lounge in midtown Atlanta. Good friend of mine Helix will be coming up from southern GA to play his unique brand of dub techno with a very special DJ set early in the evening. For those who are unfamiliar with him, he recently contributed a podcast for the Heated Podcast series. Helix also has penned a number of original tunes that I have featured in my sets at Thermal in previous months and most recently posted a stripped down remix of NYC’s Incyde.

Additionally, this show falls two days before my birthday this year so I am inviting anybody who wants to come out and help celebrate to definitely make it out to Lava Lounge for what will surely be an interesting birthday DJ set from myself if previous years are any indication of this. Yes, I know it’s a ‘school-night’ for many, including myself, however I’d definitely like to see everybody who can make it out come by for a bit and enjoy the tunes, and what will likely be excellent weather as the fall starts to creep in to Atlanta finally.

Revy at Thermal (Lava Lounge)

revy Revy at Thermal (Lava Lounge)It is the second Thursday of the month, which means it’s time for Heat Promotion’s monthly Thermal at Lava Lounge. This month we are pleased to have Pittsburgh’s own Revy on the decks. It is free before midnight, $5 afterwards. 21+

Revy’s music is strange. There really is no better way to put it. Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest USA before moving to Tokyo, the influence and contrast of nature and technology are made clear in his mesmerizing pieces. His sound is one that is complicated, rapidly revolving between themes which are at times serious, beautiful, strong and others almost comical and ridiculous. Each track encompasses such an emotional gamut that they themselves seem to become intelligent entities.

It’s no wonder, really. Kevin Lind began experimenting with sound as a child with whatever he had on hand, mixing and editing his storybook tapes with sound effects. He went from sound to music as a teenager, picking up saxophone and keyboard ahead of the modern era of computer music, where he first combined elements from both his controlled and random sonic palettes.

Like so many prolific artists, the drive to share his ideas took precedent. Kevin headed into the netlabel scene to test some ears, and won his respect. His music now realized, he’s started building the profile of his releases, with a vinyl release on Slant, and appearances on digital compilations on From 0-1, SubSensory, and Seta. He’s also been giving back to the netlabel community by managing Bleepsequence, a burgeoning platform for experimental media and thought provoking electronic music.

Revy sound’s is that of his resourcefulness and drive to experiment. He molds his thoughts out of the world around him, both physically and perceptually. It’s the chatter of the mind processing one’s day before resolving what it all means. It’s simply fantastic.

It has been quite some time since the first installment of Heat Promotions’ podcast, however last week we recently posted a new mix from Savannah, Ga based techno dj and producer ‘Helix.’

I first encountered Helix when he started sending me tracks a few months ago with some very refreshing unique tracks on a vein far different from many area producers I have encountered recently. Helix’s selections here show a good example of his own productions’ aesthetic in addition to those of his current influences.

For more on Helix be sure to check out his Soundcloud and Twitter accounts, and enjoy the mix below, and be sure to come check his set as a part of September’s installment of Thermal, every second Thursday at Atlanta’s Lava Lounge

Thermal 8-Jul w/ Reference

us 0708 168616 front 150x300 Thermal 8 Jul w/ ReferenceThermal, the dub techno influenced monthly that Inferno and I have been hosting up at midtown’s Lava Lounge. We have been fortunate enough to already played host to UK’s Roska, Atlanta’s own Richard Devine in addition to the regular resident Heat DJs.

As noted in an earlier post to this blog, this month’s installment of Thermal is quite special as we have two floors of music again. This time we are pleased to welcome Reference, the combination of Luke Hess and Brian Kage, in addition to Bunker resident Eric Cloutier for what is sure to be an exciting evening of ground-breaking techno sounds.

Amazing local support on this one as well as Richard Devine makes his second appearance at Thermal since it’s inception. I am definitely looking forward to this coming up Thursday in Atlanta; it is not often that the city plays host to this wide of an assortment of dub influenced artists at a single event.

For those unfamiliar with the sounds of some of these artists be sure to check out freely downloadable mixes from Eric Cloutier, Luke Hess, or check out the complete write up on the event from Heat Promotions

July 4th Recap

As many of you know already I have a long-standing habit of having to catch a Phish show if it happens to be in the area. I have been seeing them since 1996, and quite regularly since 1999 and have been fortunate to amass a great group of friends during my time travelling catching shows around the country. It has been seven years since Phish has played in Atlanta, and eleven since the last July 3rd and 4th shows I saw them perform, at Lakewood Amphitheater, which were among some of the better shows I have seen.

Thanks to the fact these shows fell on a weekend and a national holiday, quite a number of friends I have not had an opportunity to see in quite a long time happened to be able to make the trek here for the weekend so in addition to catching some wonderful live music, I had the chance to catch up with a number of friends who I ordinarily to not get to see all that frequently.

For those that care, the shows were excellent, the weather was amazing; it was warm, but not unseasonably so as it has been in the weeks leading up to the fourth of July. Additionally, with the recent acquisition of my iPhone 4, I was able to get a fair amount of decent photographs and some interesting HD video from the shows this weekend, all of which are available for viewing on my Flickr account.

All in all a wonderful weekend, a break from work, some wonderful food and excellent times with friends is always a welcome change from the regular work week. The fun continues through the end of this week as we have a huge Heat Promotions’ event on Thursday for our Thermal monthly series at Lava Lounge, and additionally I’ll be joining Richard Devine and DJG at The Soundtable for an Atlanta Dubstep event on Friday!
